Down jacket / coat

I'm thinking of buying a down jacket / coat for winter. I am intending to do some travel to cold countries including above the Arctic circle, see polar night, etc.

I'm considering a jacket but open to a coat - although might be a bit long does anyone have any suggestions?

Yes get a 600-700 fill real down jacket not polyester.

I have four down jackets, a very light weight jacket from Massimo Dutti, a more heavy duty everyday one from Musto, a Winter everyday one from Musto and a super heavy duty one bought for Danish winter weather from Uniqlo - it feels like you are tucked up in bed under a duvet but can get too hot if you are not in very cold weather. The winter ones are about mid- thigh length and the others are short.

I was looking at a 66° North one but not sure if it's too hot for the UK as obvs won't be abroad all the time

I wear my 600 fill down coat all the time from November to the end of Feb.

I bought this from Mountain Warehouse the other day - mostly because it was nearly 50% off, but actually it looks great on. Very cosy.

I don’t think you’ll find one coat that’s suitable for the arctic circle and the UK. You’ll roast wearing something designed for the arctic in the UK, and you’ll freeze wearing the suggestions so far in this thread in the arctic.

If you’re after something for a very cold climate, a lot of coats from UK brands just won’t really cut it. I’d look at Scandi/Canadian brands. I have a puffer from Elvine, they categorise their coats according to what temps they’re recommended to wear in, this is their ‘extreme winter’ range.

I live in Scotland so mine gets plenty of wear in winter here, often with just a thin layer underneath, but with thermals, layers, hat, gloves etc it’s great for winter trips abroad. Lots of their coats have a good degree of waterproofness too which helps make them more useful for the UK.

These jackets are made fit for extreme winter climates. The long silhouettes, rich padding and lining make them the ultimate companion during intensely cold weather. Approx. temperature between -5° to -25° C The perceived warmth of our jackets depends...

Yes I thought that. Maybe I'll just get the 66° North one and layer hugely underneath it. I have polartec fleeces and baselayers

Not true at all. Just checked mine and it’s 700 not 600 fill pure down. It’s lovely and warm in the winter and means you don’t have to wear masses of layers and thermal vests underneath when it’s very cold. Mine’s a coat too not a jacket.

It depends - if you’re actually camping/trekking then no. But if you’re doing a tourist tour close to base it should be ok.

I got a beautiful down coat from moutain warehouse a few years ago. I can only wear it if it's minus weather or it's far too hot. I only paid £99 but saw it last year on their website for £180. Worth every penny.
