Anyone not get along with jumpers?

Always loved them, covet them and have a few here, but I notice that whenever winter comes around I don't seem to wear them much. They are ok if chunky, without a coat, but I often struggle to get them neatly under coats.

If there is any chunkiness at all then coats fit horribly over them, especially if sleeves are wide, too long or dropped shoulder.

So I realised only fine, thinner knits that sit close to the body work well under a coat. Not rocket science but frustrating as most knitwear right now is boxy, thick or wide sleeved.

Is there an alternative to keeping warm? I have some nice coats and love wearing them but my knits from the likes of Toast and Finisterre are too ungainly to go under them, and whenever I wear cashmere the slightest thing destroys them, no matter the price point. So maybe they're great for days when you dont need a coat and it isn't raining, or if you are happy to wear a bloody massive coat Grin

I suppose i need something thin that is warm. Does anyone else find this is the case? I also get warm too easily thanks to meno now so being ever so slightly cooler is preferable!

I recommend you try cashmere again.

Pricewise - I only buy in the sales (usually in summer) or from outlet stores (eg BrandAlley). I tend to spend c£80-100 per jumper, not cheap but a lot less than a Toast or Finisterre chunky knit. Makes it less of a tragedy if it does end up with a hole in the elbow, and can be recycled via Turtledoves.

Yes it does bobble. But wool and wool mix jumpers also bobble anyway (and acrylic bobbles worst of all). Looser weave cashmere bobbles and misshapes worse so I tend to avoid it. I have an electric bobble remover which helps.

I’ve had to spend the last two winters with just 4 jumpers (large acrylic Aran, slouch neck cotton and cashmere tunic, brown fluffy bell sleeves and skinny navy polo neck) despite the fact I own a lot more and love the Autumnal cosiness of the first woolly pullover!

I think open knitted cable styles are a good compromise. You get the aesthetic without the weight.
Cotton and Cashmere (70/30) blend are great. I’ve found some in M&S.
Sweater vests (USA) or vneck popovers (UK) would solve the sleeve problem. I think they’re still in fashion…

Totally agree! I thought I was the only one. Haven’t hit menopause yet but I think my endometriosis is giving me awful pms and periods so half the month I feel hot and sweaty.
I got rid of so many chunky knits this year because like you on analysis I realised I was only wearing them around the house but if I need to nip out I don’t want to change again to fit something under a coat. Seem to reach only for my raincoat due to being so hot mind you.
Agree with the necklines also. I liked that white company linked above but I agree that it’ll age badly.
Had a merino fine-knit henley from COS last year which I wore the most but destroyed in the wash by accident!
I have googled merino fine-knit tops/jumpers but hardly see anything this year so will watch this thread for suggestions.
My mum has some cashmere v-necks from john lewis which have aged very well I must say. Maybe try john lewis.

Boden does some great thin jumpers also. Not wool or cashmere just the cotton mixes.

I'm in the black thermal long-sleeved vest camp, been wearing them for years, M & S ones, bit of sparkle in them, lovely, my teenagers wear them too. I find the same with jumpers, I just don't seem to fit everything under a coat these days, probably due to my expanding waistline. I find with thermal long-sleeved t-shirt, coat and scarf that's fine for me. Puffa jacket if v cold. I live in a warmish part of the Uk though.

Get NavyGrey the Weekend. In wearing it right now and it's perfect in every way

LittleBoxesOnAHillside · 22/10/2023 20:17

The Navygrey ones are lovely, a bit short and boxy though, which is great but not for me. Similar at Carrier Company but much more affordable, and similarly well made (perhaps even more so?). More Monty Don than me though sadly as I can't pull off that look to save my life.

Finisterre are fantastic, I have a wonderful speckled navy jumper (farne?) that I wear when it's dry enough to leave a coat at home. it is my only actual functional jumper.

I have a long tweed coat and a long pure wool navy coat. When it's super cold and damp I might wear my big Seasalt waterproof which has a very warm lining. You barely need anything under that thing. With the wool coats (my faves) I prefer something sleeker underneath so merino would be perfect if i could find something i liked that didn't throttle my neck.

I will check out the thin jumper suggestions, thank you all!

Look for V neck jumpers @LittleBoxesOnAHillside

The weekend isn't short at all but perhaps that's cos I sized up to make it slouchier? I should be a medium but have a large and it's perfect. Not at all short or boxy x

I wear a cape coat

givemeasunnyday · 23/10/2023 07:47

Another vote for merino - and it can be layered without being bulky

givemeasunnyday · 23/10/2023 07:52

Merino sounds like a great solution. Difficult to find it without a high neck though.

You might have to come to NZ one winter! We live in merino here, and you can find any style you want, at any price.

I think this fits the bill from White Company, it is definitely the right neck and colour BUT it looks like it would age badly, and contains wool, ecovero (or whatever it is called) and nylon.

I like that. If you don’t ever feel very cold then that sort of jumper can be really flattering. White Stuff usually wears/washes well.

I would be blue with cold wearing that in the winter. That’s the sort of top I’d wear on a cloudy summers day 😬
