Why do I only get Dandruff in winter months

lotsofthingstolearn · 22/10/2023 07:34

In summer, I don't have a problem at all but, as soon as the weather starts to feel more autumnal, I get what I can describe as dandruff.

It starts at the sides of my temples, around my hairline etc and then gets worse

Last year moo goo seemed to help but also made my hair greasy

Has anyone had similar, or advice of what I can do

Are you wearing hats/hoods more ?

teenysaladandsniffofarose · 22/10/2023 07:52

Our skin tends to be dryer in colder months so that's probably the reason!

Weleda rosemary hair tonic has worked wonders for my dandruff and it's a decent price too.

Seaside3 · 22/10/2023 08:30

Is it psoriasis? May be worth asking your doctor.

evildan · 22/10/2023 08:40

I was about to say it could be psoriasis. UV light can clear it up so it can improve in summer, and flare up again in winter.

SmugglersHaunt · 22/10/2023 09:09

It might be sebhorroeic dermatitis - I would wash with Nizoral. Should sort it out

Mayhemmumma · 22/10/2023 09:35

After I wash my hair (best shampoo for me is Olaplex) I put in some drops of body shop ginger serum to worst area and rub in before I blow dry - makes a big difference when it's cold and my scalp gets dry.

Thighdentitycrisis · 22/10/2023 09:43

Can I ask how you use it please?
I have very thick hair and imagine a watery tonic getting lost / absorbed very quickly in my hair
I see there is a Rosemary Oil too and wondering if that might work

Thighdentitycrisis · 22/10/2023 09:44

sorry question was for @teenysaladandsniffofarose

You could also try washing with a sulfate free shampoo as it's gentle (does not lather as much as sulfate shampoo) and helps with scalp irritation. It works for me, I ran out and bought normal shampoo... dry scalp came back.

I used Vosene to clear dandruff intially and then stuck with sulfate free shampoo.

lotsofthingstolearn · 22/10/2023 15:50

Thanks all

I use sulphate free, am not wearing hats, tried using extra conditioner and really got into scalp to ensure that I'm moisturising as it were.

It's really strange....

I get psoriasis in exactly the same pattern you describe. It's probably worth checking with your Dr. Sunlight/uv can help keep it a bay, so maybe why you're noticing it more in winter.

I struggled with application from the bottle so I bought a bottle with a brush type nozzle and run it through my scalp then rub it in. It doesn't weigh it down or make my roots greasy at all!

@teenysaladandsniffofarose
thanksfor the link to the bottle. I have really thick hair never gets greasy. I might try the Weleda oil

Sugarmole · 23/10/2023 19:02

As I've got older my skin has become noticeably drier. I'm not sure if that relates to you too OP . I do take a fish oil and evening primrose oil supplement, I'm not sure if that helps maintain my scalp.
Using straighteners and excessive hair dryer use can cause me to have dry scalp.

PansyP · 25/10/2023 19:41

Central heating?

LouS84 · 25/10/2023 19:57

If it’s dry skin / eczema, I find it can flare up as soon as I’m in and out of places with central heating. So around now. You could try the skinsalve shampoo -

Skin Salve shampoo is formulated to complement the Skin Salve programme by cleaning hair beautifully leaving it healthy with no itchy scalp

Try MooGoo Shampoo. It has been transformative for me and my son recommends it to all his mates, who love it.

Winter199 · 25/10/2023 20:04

I was exactly the same OP! I use the ginger range from the body shop- shampoo, conditioner and also as and when needed the ginger scalp serum. The serum is a must (I may try going back to normal shampoo) but will forever use the serum as and when needed. Absolutely no dandruff when using that! Cannot live without it. I only use it a couple times a month so lasts forever.

HappiDaze · 25/10/2023 20:13

Central heating can really dry your skin out so maybe that's what's happening to your scalp

TallulahG · 26/10/2023 12:15

I have it worse in winter too. Nizoral is the only thing that keeps it at bay. Bloody expensive though and only available over the counter.

JaneJeffer · 26/10/2023 12:55

Do you eat more sugary food in winter?

lotsofthingstolearn · 26/10/2023 14:37

Sorry everyone, I didn't realise that there were more posts!

I've used MooGoo, it worked a treat, but also made my hair greasy. Perhaps I need to give it another try? I also colour my hair so Nizorel, I don't want to try as I heard it strips it, but also, have heard it's good. I used to use the L'oreal Men's anti dandruff, but they've discontinued.

Friend has also recommended the ginger Body Shop stuff.....

It's really frustrating. Suspect I'm just going to have to go down a route of trial and error

I have bright pink hair and I use nizoral. I only use it on my roots- about an inch or so- and massage it in with one of those brushes (recommended on here). Then I rinse and I condition my hair with Head & Shoulders- the one for coloured hair- I don't go near the roots.

This combo works well for me, no fading and no tangles.
