Adult acne….

Sorry this will be so long-winded!
I had clear skin until my early thirties… since then BAM! Spots constantly. Forehead and cheeks mainly. Very rarely on my nose. Occasionally on my chin. Some are tiny with a clear white head, some huge painful red lumps with no head. Some normal sized with a whitehead.
I have mostly dry skin I would say. Never been particularly oily. Orange peel texture on my cheeks. Loads of pigmentation from old spots. The last 4 years or so have been terrible. My skin seems to cycle from being ok, to a mess, to ok again. When I say ok - it’s never clear but I will have minimal spots.
My GP said it’s Acne rosacea. I do not flush at all. I have tried metrogel - didn’t work. I have tried azaleic acid. It does work to an extent, but spots never fully go away.
Finally seen a derm in the summer. She prescribed Soolantra. Been using that for almost three months - no real improvement so I think it will be discontinued.
I don’t think I have rosacea - I think it’s acne.
I am thinking oral antibiotics might be my next step. Has anyone else had success with oral antibiotics after trying what feels like everything? The derm mentioned roaccutane to me if the Soolantra failed. I know people have had amazing results from this.
I am just so fed up with waking up every day to new spots. It’s never ending!

Sorry - I’ve been on lymecycline! Should I be asking for a different oral antibiotic?

If it is acne you shouldn’t just be on an antibiotic, it should be in conjunction with a topical treatment https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/ng198

Interesting. I am currently still using the azaleic acid which should be in combo with lymecycline/doxy. Since I have tried the lymecycline maybe I need to ask for doxy…

Could it be a hormonal issue at all?

I had acne since late teens and tried everything. Some worked a bit, others not so much. But my face CLEARED when I got pregnant. And stayed clear.
They started to come back a few months after birth but then just was pregnant again so off they went.
Now im trialing different combined pills to see which have the best effects x

I am honestly not sure. I was on birth control from about 17. Stayed on it until I was 27. Skin issues started a few years later.

Op have you tried a retinol?

Whatsthestorymorningglory95 · 21/10/2023 22:31

I did, I had a skin and me subscription. Didn’t do anything for me unfortunately.

Id say try and go back on them and see if you notice a difference? Can take a few months but can take ages to get out your system x

I'm in my 50s and after decent skin for years had horrific hormonal acne in late 40s. Lymecycline made a huge improvement but didn't ever clear it completely. I had a topical cream as well Duo? Something but awful stuff

Dr was concerned about long term use, but as skin became unbearable if I tried to stop changed prescription to Oxytetracycline with soolantra. Game changer. One course and back to decent skin. Like everyone still have the occasional breakout but it definitely worked for me.
