The perfect black jumper...

I have recently returned to work from maternity leave and really struggling with my sense of style - knowing what suits my body shape and what I want to wear now mid 30s in an office where many are younger.

In the winter I used to love putting a jumper over summer skirts and dresses and wearing them with tights and boots.

However I am currently really struggling to find a jumper that would work for this. Ideally I am looking for:

  • a black jumper
  • Not too fitted but not massively oversized. Would like some shape to it
  • Something I could tuck into a skirt or wear loose over the top
  • would prefer under £50
I thought it would be simple but can't find anything suitable!

Normally shop for work in M&S, Whistles, Hush

Thanks for sharing, just taking a look. Is it very lightweight? Even if you sized up would you be able to wear something underneath without it being too obvious (if that makes sense!)

It is quite lightweight but I certainly do sometimes wear shirts or t shirts underneath. They wash well too, and don't bobble.

and not itchy at all if worn on its own.

I'm really going to sound like I work for M&S marketing department now. But their wide leg trousers are brilliant for work too.

Thanks so much!! Really helpful

I’ve been looking for the same OP. Every jumper is either too fitted or too baggy. I would prefer a cotton jumper and not wool.
Last year I bought a couple of those knitted vests from M&S. Would this be an option for you?
They are great over long sleeved dresses and I also wear a long sleeved T’shirt with a skirt and put one of these on top. I am still wearing them now but also still looking for that perfect jumper!

I buy great jumpers in the mens section from Zara! They have that oversized but not ridiculous fit, and shockingly much nicer quality.

Lostmystyle · 20/10/2023 13:38

I hadn't thought of that, will take a look!

Uniqlo! Their merino wool jumpers are my winter staple, great price, wash well, don’t bobble.

Catatemysandwich · 20/10/2023 13:44

I second the Uniqlo merino jumpers!

Summerhillsquare · 20/10/2023 13:46

White Company. Just got a beaut on vinted.

StillSmallVoice · 20/10/2023 13:53

Another vote for the M&S merino. They are good quality, comfortable and wash well

Lostmystyle · 20/10/2023 15:14

Thanks so much! Love the look of the uniqlow ones. Any advice on their sizing? Often a 14 on top

@itsevolutionbaby, that looks lovely. Is it machine washable, do you know? And it is warm?

itsevolutionbaby · 20/10/2023 16:26

It's very warm, but it says hand wash only on the label

Notsojollyroger · 20/10/2023 22:17

@itsevolutionbaby thank you! I might just be tempted to order the navy, despite the handwashing!

Switchingoff · 20/10/2023 22:21

I bought one of the Uniqlo merino ones a few years ago and it’s possibly the nicest fitting jumper I’ve ever owned but I found it soooo itchy I ended up wearing it very rarely and so gave it away

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 20/10/2023 22:27

The M&S merino are lovely, but the quality isn’t great. They seem to bobble/get loose threads very quickly.

RampantIvy · 20/10/2023 22:30

I fourth the Uniqlo ones. They machine wash well, and the arms are long enough for my long arms

Moonwatcher1234 · 20/10/2023 23:16

John Lewis Kin range - just perfect black jumpers
