Non bulky but warm kids coat. Does it exist?

Frugi have discontinued the ONLY coat my DD could tolerate wearing (the Explorer) so I’m on the hunt for an alternative.

I’d like it to be warm, waterproof or at least showerproof. But the main thing for her is that it doesn’t feel stiff or bulky (she doesn’t have a diagnosis or anything but definitely has some sensory intolerance when it comes to clothes!).

I’d love some recommendations.

Have you looked for it second hand?

If you must buy new try Polarn og Pyret, my DDs like a lot of their jackets and they are both quite fussy about bulky or heavy jackets

I’m constantly scouring Vinted and relevant Facebook groups but not coming up in her size.

My DCs have this coat, they're soft inside and out.

Budget? Age range? Jojo Maman used to do some great kids rain coats. Fleece lined and the fabric not stiff.
Polarno Pyret too, but often stiffer outdoor fabrics.

Second hand good quality stuff can be a better option than a cheaper new. You wouldn't bat an eyelid to pass clothes down through a family and they grow so fast. It's costly to buy good hard wearing clothing for kids.

Thank you! Do you find it warm enough for cold weather?

I buy a lot of second hand kids clothes. No need to persuade me on that front

Age 7/8. Can stretch the budget for the right coat. No pink or otherwise obviously girly markers

Mountain warehouse?

Alternatively I got a pack away jacket from joules. Lightweight and warm.

eatthecheese · 19/10/2023 23:23

@Rainallnight yes definitely warm enough, saw us through the hellish cold temp this year. Also roomy too for a few layers underneath, and still fit over 18 months later (twins almost 4). Saw your post about pink and this is a downside, not much variety of colours.

My DD6 is exactly the same... says she can't wear 'puffy' winter coats. The melt downs we've had... anyway, I bought a rather awesome lined/padded Trespass coat for her recently and it's perfect. I got it second hand on vinted for £5 and it was in amazing condition. They sell them new too, but I like to buy PL when possible.

mugboat · 19/10/2023 23:28

This is the coat we got that I just posted aboit.... I found it as my eldest was given one in green which my DD6 liked the look of. Honestly it's fabulous

Thanks all! Going to sleep now, but will keep investigating in the morning

We've had a revolving door of these.
Fabric is on the stiff side as it's fully waterproof, but zip in and out fleece so they're ace for summer and winter.
Really hard wearing, washes well. Have had loads of wear 2-3 yrs across two kids and then been passed down to a friends child so I thoroughly recommend if you can try on to see if it is too "stiff" though they do soften up.
Hoods are detachable but not lined so you'll need a separate beamy hat

Hi @TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams was there a link you were going to add? 😊

Not sure about the coat but DS1 has the dungarees of that muddy puddles coat and they're great - really warm and he can run about in them.

Rainallnight · 20/10/2023 09:02

@Merrow good intell! So the fabric isn’t stiff?

OP posts:
Merrow · 20/10/2023 10:14

No, not at all. There's more heft to them than say the Lidl waterproofs with the fleecy lining, but it's because the fleece is a good thickness rather than stiff outer material.

Second this, my daughter has the beige and my son has the blue. Warm, soft inside, light weight and waterproof - great winter coat.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 20/10/2023 14:07

Muddypuddles would be my shout, my kids have lived in them for years in autumn/winter.

Zooeyzo · 20/10/2023 14:07

I bought my dd a Joules coat with two coats zipped together is very warm and lightweight.

avocadotofu · 21/10/2023 09:53

We really like Polarn O Pyret. We get the waterproof coat and fleece and then we mix and match depending on the weather. The fleece snaps into the coat and it's really lightweight and cosy.
