Is this ok for an awards ceremony?

Hi all, some advice needed please.

I’ve been invited to an awards ceremony at work - the dress code is ‘dress to impress’ and it’s at a ballroom. It’s not an actual ball and my workplace is corporate but more like casual corporate if that makes any sense at all!

it’s definitely not as formal as black tie and so I’m struggling a bit with what to wear. I feel very meh about myself at the moment and was wondering if something like this might be ok? I’m 5ft6 and a 14-16.

I don’t have a huge budget (ideally under £50 which this is)

I think for all talking about the pile on and how it’s unfair, it’s pretty clear from the jumpsuit that OP has posted that this is something within her normal style and comfort zone. While it’s not for everyone, coming on being hyper critical of what’s a very inoffensive item of clothing and then pretty much telling the OP she’s has no style and recommending something the complete opposite (and obvs v marmite) is just mean.

Had OP posted a dress by a designer like Cawley Studios or Stine Goya then it would be fair to say this or versions of this represented her style choices but she didn’t.

Normally S & B is one of the more supportive boards but I'm really surprised.to see the pile on in this one. So someone likes Joanie and thought the OP might too. Most people don't. Looks like people are just commenting now for the opportunity of saying something horrible about Joanie rather than something useful to the OP.

Not that I've got anything more useful to say ironically..

OP, I've got no dress sense whatsoever but I do like the outfit you posted. Seems exactly right for a work award ceremony. A bit sparkly but not over the top.

May I direct your attention to the first sentence of the first response to the OP?

”It'll do but that's about the best that can be said.”

KirstenBlest · 20/10/2023 07:05

Where's the jumpsuit from, @Woahtherehoney ?
I like it but don't think you'll stand out in it, but some good jewellery might help.

merrymelodies · 20/10/2023 07:19

It's not very exciting but...

I think the response to the OP WAS snarky but I think we’re at the point now where we should move on. We don’t need to keep making the same point.

I think the jumpsuit is a safe option yes but I think it could look very chic. Why does everyone need to “ stand out”? The aim is to fit the dress code and to feel like the best version of yourself. I would put a tuxedo jacket or velvet jacket over top of the jumpsuit but that’s me - the OP may not be into that style or have the budget for that.

Funnily enough this came up on my FB today.

😂😂

I think to pull off any of those joanie dresses you would have to really commit- I can see a friend of mine in one, with her enormous curly hair, platforms and big jewellery, straight out of the 70’s. But it’s definitely ‘a look’ which wouldn’t work on many people!

KirstenBlest · 20/10/2023 10:24

The link to the much mentioned clothes site opens at the worst dresses. Other pages are probably more suitable.
I can't get over the model with the lego haircut. It's hideous.

ALunchbox · 20/10/2023 12:10

I think it looks nice but I'd be freezing in this!

RachelGreensHair · 20/10/2023 13:01

The Lego haircut is Dawn o'porter herself isn't it?

KirstenBlest · 20/10/2023 13:52

I think so. I don't know who she is though.

Love this thread! And the enthusiasts and detractors of Joanie clothing.
Black tie and Awards events have got a lot more confusing since covid. Back in 2019 I would have worn a full length, strapless evening frock. Now that seems completely over the top and I think jumpsuits, shorter frocks.

The best thing to do is look at any photos you can find of last year's event and see what people were wearing then.
