Sezanne; is it special?

Livelifelaughter · 18/10/2023 17:22

There's a Facebook page which seems to show women head to toe in Sezanne and showing their latest shopping list of many hundreds of pounds/dollars of Sezanne which they then refer to as people " I love my Betty am wearing her tonight" ; some of it looks great but some incredibly mediocre and over priced. Can anyone explain this obsession?

Theres the odd thing I like but overall it’s too frilly for my tastes.

Delatron · 18/10/2023 17:31

You have to be careful not to be sucked in by pictures of sexy French women wearing their cardigans unbuttoned to the waist…then wondering why it doesn’t look the same on you when you wear it normally (and I’m not sexy and French).

Just sent two jumpers back for this exact reason…

The odd piece is great. I have a couple of beautiful black dresses that I always get complimented on and a pair of lovely boots. Quality is good and they are better with returns now.

Good resale prices in Vinted - a couple of jumpers from last year went for £40 when I got bored of them.

thedevilinablackdress · 18/10/2023 17:47

People have hobbies. Most of us wouldn't understand most of them.

Bloomingmagnolia · 18/10/2023 17:48

There are always queues on a Saturday outside the Notting Hill store. Bonkers. I like the knitwear, but it’s overpriced. Their colab with Sea New York was nice.

UsernameNotAvailableNow · 18/10/2023 17:50

It is good quality and holds its value. I have a few bits and it is notably superior to competitors in the same price category. But yes to the PP who said it’s very frilly and needing to be mindful that we’re not all French models. Most of those cardigans would look ridiculous on me. I have a few bits and enjoy wearing them, that’s about it

boomboom109283 · 18/10/2023 17:54

I have only recently started buying from them and love it. I have two gorgeous jumpers, a black dress for Xmas season and a work dress with Peter Pan collar. Expensive but in my opinion worth it. Lovely material and cut. Comes in a lovely illustrated box - so nice out of box experience.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 18/10/2023 17:55

I love sezane, but wouldn’t wear it (or anything) head to toe. Like anything it’s finding the pieces that work for you, some of it would look like a washing up rag on me, but the bits I’ve bought I love. They wash and wear well. The frilly stuff again, not my style but I love the knitwear and have a couple of gorgeous dresses that I will keep wearing for years.

TheLeadbetterLife · 18/10/2023 20:00

Some of it looks nice but I don't like plastic fabric, and most of their knitwear is high percentage polyamide or similar. At those prices they should be all or mostly natural.

happylittlesloth · 18/10/2023 20:21

Some of it is very good quality

minipie · 18/10/2023 20:25

I’ve done two big orders from there having high hopes. Every single thing went back. Twice. Various reasons - shiny blouse fabrics, trousers all faaaar too long (I’m short but these were ridiculous), itchy knitwear, leather bag/shoes gorgeous but too stiff to use IRL.

For a similar vibe I like La Redoute (have to look quite carefully but good style/price ration when you find it) or ba&sh (more expensive than Sezane).

I really don't like non natural knit wear...

I went to the Notting Hill shop in the summer and was incredibly disappointed. The knitwear wasn't very good quality and what I tried on was itchy. The colours of the jumpers were lovely but I couldn't find anything else I wanted to try on.

ferretface · 18/10/2023 22:06

Being a frilly kind of person I like Sezane designs but the quality is not what it used to be and they churn out too many collections featuring too much polyester.

PuppyMcPupFace · 18/10/2023 22:18

I love thé blouses and think they're not too overpriced for the quality.

The knitwear in the Paris stores is beautifully presented and I fell in love with all of it. Unfortunately it's too boxy for me and just hangs off my very non French boobs.

UnconventionalLife · 18/10/2023 23:28

I bought several things over the past couple of years & I have absolutely loved them. I have trousers, shirts/ blouses, tshirts, jacket & knitwear & jeans.
I found then to be very good quality with really lovely detailing.
Some of my shirts I have worn to death
I'm tall so I love the longer length in the trousers

I have found some of the tops to be on the short side in the body.
Overall I'm a fan

shumbuffle · 18/10/2023 23:44

I'm a recent convert after much research. I've had to send half of my two orders back but I was expecting that given I'm ordering off the website (not near London).

I am of a frilly disposition - I love the rear button lacy blouses and have had loads of compliments, but I ordered smaller on the second order for tucking-in purposes - my normal size looked a bit boxy.

I'm really short so I've learnt that I can only order skinny 7/8ths without having to find someone to take things up. Mini skirts have been fine though and not so mini that I've worn them into the office.

Gold rubie shoes were sent back as they were damaged on arrival and I could see that they would quickly look pretty dismal with regular use.

The knitwear isn't for me as I know I'm not great at effective hand washing.

But no other brand speaks to me right now so I'll keep ordering.

Galiana · 19/10/2023 00:52

Well, FB groups are always a bit...particular.

I would never flip off another woman's stylistic choice if it was well met.

FB groups gonna FB.

It's obviously a little bonkers to do a brand's marketing for it, and you know, unless you're an ingénue, you're just generally a woman wearing quite average clothes.

And you will look quite average.

HazardLights · 19/10/2023 03:38

I do quite like Sezane. The non polyester stuff anyway. But on a separate note, it really makes me cringe when people use ‘she’ or ‘her’ to refer to inanimate objects, like a bag or whatever. Am I the only one?

Ruthietuthie · 19/10/2023 03:51

I've ordered from them several times, but always ended up sending everything back. The cuts are quite boxy. so if you aren't very slim and flat-chested you can look quite frumpy. Also the colors are always quite muted. I suit clearer colors, jewel tones and bright white, so their muted hues just look faded and dull on me.

toucaninjapan · 19/10/2023 08:06

I find it funny how in some countries Sezane's clothes are deemed "expensive" and in some other places they are called "cheap".
For instance, I've just seen a Japanese article talking about Kate Middleton's recent outing in Sezane jumper and skirt, which had a brief introduction of the brand - the journalist called Sezane "very affordable". Of course it looks cheap when you compare it with typical Japanese clothes brands aimed at women in their 30s (that is the main clientele of Sezane, I believe). You'd pay the same price for a typical high street 100% polyester shirt in Tokyo and a 100% silk Sezane shipped from France, but Sezane's shirt would have the quality there and all their beautiful delicate details.
Sezane might look pricy or cheap depending on where you live and the FB groups you are talking about have people from all over the world.

Some people don't find mohair or alpaca itchy (I don't), some don't mind having a bit of polyamide to hold a mix of different natural fibers together. Some people don't even mind polyester (I'm looking at you, the majority of Japanese, happily wearing polyester in tropical summer heat with no deodorant - how they don't sweat in these circumstances, I have no idea👀). Some people just love romantic or vintage-y designs (or they mainly suit romantic lacey clothing - I'm one of those unfortunate ones who can't wear anything cool or edgy without looking ridiculous in it). People just love different things, I suppose, and what may look as a mediocre piece to one person may look like an epitome of understated chic to another. I think it's good we all love different things!

Livelifelaughter · 19/10/2023 09:41

I actually think the fussiness of the design makes it interesting it's more the head to toe look and slightly washed out tones that I find bizzare that people spend heaps on when you can get a lot of similar stuff in literally Per Una. It seems to be really popular in the US, no one from France seems quite obsessed...

I used to buy and sell secondhand Mulberry bags and there were lots of references to people 'reaching for her'. That is, picking up a bag. Yuck.

toucaninjapan · 19/10/2023 10:00

@Livelifelaughter I presume you didn't join the Sézane Addict group on FB (the French one)? French ladies post only there, and it's much bigger than all the other groups (brace yourself for head-to-toe looks though, it's full of them!)

LunaNorth · 19/10/2023 10:04

I’ve got two lovely cardis that can be worn backwards as jumpers and the colours are lovely.

I have a really good quality white shirt from there.

I also bought a pair of chino type trousers in the summer and they’ve been brilliant. Really good quality thick fabric with a bit of stretch, and they wash really well.

On the other hand, I’ve sent stuff back, too. It’s a mixed bag.
