Going away for a month to Japan. It'll be 14 to 18 C in the day and colder at night. Going walking, sightseeing, city stuff too.

Need a couple of pairs of trousers that will be comfortable but be reasonably smart.

I'm a tall size 16.

Rohan!! I live in Rohan trousers because I walk my dog every day. Pockets, easy to wash and dry, and some look quite smart. Comfortable. In the colder months I wear thin thermal’s underneath.

I had no idea Wallis still existed…

great ideas thank you.

Uniqlo leggings trousers are good for that sort of thing, comfortable but don't crumple.

I bought these a couple of years ago and wear them all the time. So far I am delighted with them. Several "secret" pockets as well as the obvious pockets, comfortable even in hot weather, smart-looking in trouser form but also "convertible" to a sort of harem pants type of ¾ shorts, don't wrinkle even after 13 hours in economy, can be handwashed in the hotel bathroom and will dry quickly.

Downsides - the "slate" colour is more green than grey (should have bought black), the smallest size is too big and long for me so they swamp me a bit. But as you are tall, those wouldn't apply.

If you don't want wide leg, I love magic trousers - good ones though with spandex, not the cheap ones on Amazon etc.

Mine are straight leg, pull on, side pockets, elasticated drawstring waist, I wear them rolled up with trainers, tucked under to crop with heels and loafers. They are the comfiest trousers I own, yet I wear them out, especially the black.

For wide leg, I like the John Lewis Any Day ones.

Rohan. I've travelled the world in them, hiked a glacier in them, worn them on safari, worn them on city breaks in all weathers. I treated myself to a new pair with a thin fleecy lining which I wore in Iceland recently. They look great, wash well, dry fast and look almost new despite the hammering they get.

BigDahliaFan · 18/10/2023 11:37

For the Rohan fans - I've got to order on line. Which ones look the least 'walkery'.....?. And is a 16 a decent 16 or a large 14?

Yes!

Rohan specialise in this type of thing!

With Rohan, go up if you are between sizes.

Have a look at Acai too, but they might be too walkery for you. Rohan do trchnixal clothing that looks normal.

ApolloandDaphne · 18/10/2023 11:44

I have several pairs of Rohan Ramblers and love them. They look smart enough, are very comfortable and wash/dry quickly and easily.

Hi, I have two pairs of "Lauren Ralph Lauren Stretch Twill Skinny Trousers" - they are smart enough to wear during the day when sightseeing, and comfortable enough to travel in as they are very stretchy. They have a side zip so no bulk at the front. I have them in Navy and Black but they do other colours. Be careful where you buy them from because the price can vary from £139 from John Lewis or direct from Ralph Lauren down to £94 from Zalando (hopefully I won't get in trouble for advertising by mentioning these names). They are little expensive but so worth it - the most comfortable trousers I have ever bought and they wash amazingly

herownworstenemy · 18/10/2023 11:53

Rohan fit is pretty TTS but if you're between size up. Also measure your leg length because they do different options.

I wore the fleece lined ones to a posh gastropub after a walk on Saturday, they didn't look particularly walker-y with different boots and a smart pullover. I have a pair that look a bit like combats, they look really walker-y if I wear them with hiking boots but they don't stand out as technical gear if I wear them with a tshirt & trainers.

ForfarBridie · 18/10/2023 11:59

I wear a lot of Robell. I travel in them and use them when out and about sight seeing.

Osakagirl · 18/10/2023 12:30

I lived in Japan for a couple of years. In urban parts of Japan people are quite chic, and generally more fashionable than in the UK, even London.
I wouldn't bother with Rohan trousers unless you're actively going hiking (there is quite a lot of that), as I think that you'll feel out of place in cities or sightseeing.
I'm a lot shorter than you, but I love Cos, and they have some lovely, slightly unusual shapes that would work. Their chinos are great quality and I'm still wearing a pair I bought eight years ago. The other thing is that there are lots of Western brands there and obviously Uniqlo originated there. And just one more thing - if you are going to Osaka, I really recommend staying a night at Koya-San, it's one of the most incredible things you can do in the whole country.

JussathoB · 18/10/2023 16:38

Hi sorry I have just seen your post. The Rohan ‘roamers’ trousers are the smartest ones because they have side seam pockets etc but no extra pockets further down the legs.
i would say they are fairly true to size. Sometimes the leg length is quite long, in these I wear ‘short’ but I am about 5’6 ins tall.

mdinbc · 18/10/2023 19:20

Also check out Lululemon trousers; they have a few different styles. Stretchy, non-wrinkle but smart enough.
