Do you wear colours that don’t suit you?

Black washes me out yet I wear a lot of it for versatility.
Tan shades are too warm but work so well with black that I wear them too to look stylish.

My blond daughter looks amazing in both.

Now, navy, charcoal, pine green, purple and burgundy really flatter my complexion but I find it hard to mix them, smaller range of choices / quality / budget add extra complexity.

Please share if you have managed to eliminate unflattering tones from your wardrobe, and where do you shop for wider range of colours.

See, I think that wearing a colourful scarf thing screams I've had my colours done. Can spot it a mile off!

What's wrong with screaming I've had my colours done? I mean, i haven't, but so what if i had?

KirstenBlest · 17/10/2023 10:30

@dudsville , there's a certain look that women wear when they've had their colours done. It's like a uniform.

Probably generalising but it's a bit like a 'MP's wife at the Tory conference' sort of look. (e.g. Christine Hamilton)

I like scarves. I like colourful scarves. I like Hermés scarves. I have quite a lot of Hermès scarves.

I'd be cringing in deep embarrassment if I found out someone thought I was wearing them because "I've had my colours done"

I think the whole "I'm a cool winter/ warm summer/ lukewarm, wet Bank holiday Monday" thing is so twee.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 17/10/2023 10:47

Like many others, my wardrobe is based on black/grey/navy, then I like to throw in a bit of colour with tops. I'm in my 50s, but never have got the hang of "Tory wife" type neckscarfs.

There are 2 colours I wear that always get compliments - cornflower blue and emerald green. I am very drawn to these colours, and these colours make me a "Summer".

There are some colours - brown, tan, lime green, acid colours, yellow, orange, khaki- which don't appeal at all, although DS has very similar colouring to me and wears orange a lot, and looks great!

I don't get the apple/cello/... type body shapes.

Snailblue · 17/10/2023 11:35

I suit jewel colours but tend to just wear them for special occasions. My general wardrobe is denim/black/navy/tan/white/grey with metallics - earrings, shoes with a bit of metallic and bag. Always a bold lipstick. That way I feel stylish but not dull.

Also actual MPs, thank you very much!

TheChosenTwo · 17/10/2023 11:39

Define ‘colours that don’t suit you’.
Impossible!
I have no idea what suits me, I just buy and wear what I like. Mainly black, navy and grey.

KirstenBlest · 17/10/2023 11:45

@WelshNerd , like who?

Yes, that's the exactly the look I think a colourful scarf gives. Scarves in general always look a bit frumpy to me, sort of 'I'm hiding myself behind this pop of colour' vibes.

But then I wear all black most days so maybe not best placed to judge 😁

Finfinfin · 17/10/2023 11:51

Colours make a HUGE difference to how I look (pale skin, freckles, auburn hair). The right colours can make me look fantastic and get loads of compliments; the wrong ones make me look like I've been dead for several days.

I only ever buy the "right" colours, plus some neutrals (black, grey). Normally - after all these years - I can tell just by looking whether a colour will suit me or not. If I'm not sure then it's easy to just hold a garment up in front of me and look in a mirror.

There are lots of people who have more versatile colouring and suit all sorts of colours. But not me.

WetBandits · 17/10/2023 11:53

Red doesn’t suit me. I don’t wear red because I don’t like it, but if I liked it I’d wear if whether it suited me or not!

WelshNerd · 17/10/2023 12:44

@KirstenBlest definitely Rachel Reeves

Do you wear colours that don’t suit you?
JonHammIsMyJamm · 17/10/2023 13:09

@NatashaDancing, in response to you not understanding the concept of colours not suiting. If I wear certain colours I tend to look sallow and washed out (hello pale grey marl/dove grey). I can get away with neutral toned colours but anything cool toned is just a no-no. I have (natural) warm medium blonde hair and hazel eyes. I look best in gold jewellery but can just about get away with white toned if it isn’t near my face. I can wear pearls near my face if they are creamy.

I think a lot of people are quite neutral toned and so can wear a lot of colours without noticing a big difference.

KirstenBlest · 17/10/2023 13:18

@WelshNerd , not so much in that photo but i looked for images of her and agree. She wasn't someone who I'd have thought of.
The usual look is very blow-dried/shampoo & set, always the same sort of colours, a neat scarf, medium heels and a brooch. Grin

Sort of like this:

Do you wear colours that don’t suit you?
WelshNerd · 17/10/2023 13:23

No scarves but I've just seen this from Welsh Parliament today. It's tough for women in politics!

Do you wear colours that don’t suit you?
KatharinaRosalie · 17/10/2023 13:46

Yes I try to wear colous that suit me - and then they generally also go together, you won't have a wardrobe of random items that won't match anything else you own. And at least in my case, they make a massive difference. I get so many compliments wearing just a simple t-shirt in a colour that suits me, and I look ill in the fanciest dress, if it's warm beige or bright orange.

One thing - nobody else really cares if you only have a small wardrobe or if you have 2000 tops in all colours of the rainbow. People see you in this one specific outfit at the time. So might as well have fever, but more flattering clothes.

You might think it’s twee, and you may well just have an eye for what suits you best and not need the input but it’s a fact that for most of us there are some colours which make us look our best and others which definitely don’t. I’ve never had my colours done either but I know without a shadow of a doubt that any form of khaki or beige or yellow toned grey makes me look tired and washed out, whereas there are certain other colours which bring me alive and I will always get compliments when I wear them. Not “that’s a nice dress”, but “wow you look great”. Maybe some types of colouring can get away with wearing not their “best” colours more than others.

NatashaDancing · 17/10/2023 14:49

I have no idea what colours suit me or don't suit me.

I'm not interested in "you look great" compliments. I've honestly never noticed this phenomenon on anyone else either.

NatashaDancing · 17/10/2023 15:28

WelshNerd · 17/10/2023 12:44

@KirstenBlest definitely Rachel Reeves

I like the colours on the scarf and it looks good with the jacket. I've no idea if the colours suit or don't suit Rachel Reeves. I would compliment her on her scarf, not her personally.

WeRateSquirrels · 17/10/2023 15:59

I never wear colours that don't suit me, probably haven't worn black for over 20 years. I also really dislike scarves though.

FollowYourDog · 17/10/2023 16:03

I naturally gravitated towards colours that suit me then I did colour analysis online and they were indeed my best colours. I feel ill when I'm wearing a bad colour because i catch myself in the mirror looking all sallow and lacklustre buuut which colours look good and whether I could get away with it is also affected by make up, whether my hair is freshly dyed and dark or colour faded, tanned or not, whether I'm wearing any necklaces earrings or headband or scarves, whether it's near my face or low cut or on bottom where it matters less.

I think with scarves they often look plonked onto a totally separate outfit. And not everyone suits a big ruffle of material up under their chin! On me it looks very messy, for example. And I feel a bit like an 80s air hostess.

Lostearring · 17/10/2023 16:19

I've never thought of myself as stylish or attractive or even that interested in clothes, but (quite) a few years ago, during a major life change I had my colours done. (No black for me!) .

I spent quite a few years eliminating the "wrong" colours from my wardrobe and building a new one, but if you do stick with only things from "your" palate, literally everything you own will go with everything you own. E.g. I have a beautiful turquoise leather jacket, that goes with all the navy and shades of grey, pink, purple, blue in my wardrobe. In the past I'd have gone with black, which didn't suit me and doesn't actually go with as much as people think it does. The same with shoes and bags, I don't have black or beige, but all my shoes work with all my clothes.

Parakeetamol · 17/10/2023 16:24

I'm a summer colour palette apparently and since I've known that I am paralysed about buying clothes. I'm messy so pastel colours seem counterintuitive.

I loved red and burgundy but then I spend hours looking at cold/warm/soft summer pallettes trying to work out if they would work.

Then I decide I can't be bothered and don't buy anything.
