Beautician/No apology

I had my eyebrows waxed and tinted on Saturday. It always stings and a bit of redness afterwards.
I left but the pain got worse- once home it was obvious I had linear burns above and below my left eyebrow. That night I had to take brufen to sleep.
I phoned the salon twice today, left short messages and then sent an email. No response- I just wanted to tell her the wax was too hot and stop it happening to anyone else. They were not cross messages - i said I wanted advice only and what to put in it. I had no response.
I just stopped there on the way home and asked to see her. I was told they were "minor" burns which will take 4-5 days to disappear. She then asked if I used Retinol and I said yes and she said that was why it had happened. No apology at all and they never asked if I was on retinol before doing it.
I attach photo and it is better than it was!
Surely it is their responsibility to do this if it's so important. And I can't believe there wasn't even a "sorry"!

I have scaring after waxing after using retinol.

Use bio oil quick!

Triptastico · 16/10/2023 18:36

Sorry for the personal question but do you have PMT or are you on your period?

This frequently happens to me around my time of the month and I have to remember to avoid going for my routine wax around this time.

Nannyamc · 16/10/2023 18:39

It happened to me also. Sudo cream was the only thing to fix it. Voted with my feet and used sugar wax from then on.

Laurdo · 16/10/2023 18:49

It's not a burn, a layer of skin has been ripped off.

Same thing happened to me and it was agony! I'd been to the same girl a few time with no issues but I'd started using retinol and had no idea it would have this affect. The girl was absolutely mortified when I showed her. Couldn't apologize enough. She gave me aloe vera to treat it, a refund and a gift voucher.

It was a friend who asked of I'd been using retinol. I let the girl know and she said she didn't even think to ask since I'd been before but will now be checking with everyone before facial waxing.

Terrible that you didn't even get a apology!

These were mine. 2 weeks before my wedding! I was freaking out!! They were healed up within a week.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 16/10/2023 18:55

It’s not a burn. It’s a skin lift. The top layer has been removed because of retinol.

Did the therapist ask if you were using retinol?

It will heal, but you will now be prone to skin lifts when you next have a eyebrow wax. Let the next therapist know.

Was it strip wax or hot wax?

GlitteringUnicorn · 16/10/2023 19:01

Hot wax.

I mean you think a quick "sorry this happened" would be better for customer relations.
And the to imply it was my fault for not mentioning I was on retinol made me quite cross. Surely it's their responsibility to ask if it's important ?

I mean the dentist checks you aren't on blood thinners before taking a tooth out?!?

Absolutely it's their responsibility. Out of every single ingredient you are using in your life how on earth are you supposed to know which ones could be problematic?

This place is an accident waiting to happen, I wouldn't go back and based on their attitude I'd consider leaving a review.

On the leaflet for the retinol it will state do not get waxing or inform professionals when getting facial treatments

And on the warfarin leaflet it will state it should be stopped before surgery. Is it the patients fault if they bleed after surgery? No it's the surgeons responsibility to stop it!

The problem is so many creams now have retinol in and people are unaware.

I had a client who told me no retinol. Doing the wax I noticed her skin looked different so asked again. No retinol. She didn’t know what it was. She said she was used a new product. We googled the ingredients and there it was. Hidden away, but it was listed. Thankfully there wasn’t a problem.

You should always be asked if you are using retinol before a wax.

happylittlesloth · 17/10/2023 06:59

It worries me how little people know about what they are putting on their skin. A good beautician will have a questionnaire/disclaimer for this

ButterMyParsnip · 17/10/2023 08:09

Yes, she should have asked about retinol. Most people who are obsessed with skincare will know you can't wax with retinol but if I were a beautician I wouldn't assume everyone does. My grandmother has used L'Oreal products for years and I doubt she knows what the retinol in her revitalift does.
