Favourite London shopping areas

It's been 15 years since I last lived in London, and I now live very rurally as the MN cliche goes.
Children now live in London though,
so we travel there every couple of months. DD is craving g a shopping g trip with me (hmmmm I wonder why??), and I feel I'm due one. Question is, where's good now? DD wants a John Lewis and Uniqlo so I'm assuming Oxford Circus. But what's good around there other than Liberty (beyond our budget)?
I'm 57, DD is 25. My current favourite online brand is Me and Em. I think she's looking to make her wardrobe more grown up.

Oxford street is a dead dump full of money laundering candy stores and vape shops now (bar Selfridges).
Regent Street is still good.

Covent Garden has been totally regenerated and is far superior for (more interesting) high street stores.

I’m sure someone will be around soon to detail where to go for independent shops/markets.

Peridot1 · 15/10/2023 16:41

I’ve been impressed with Regent St last few times I’ve been in London. Also close enough to John Lewis.

faffadoodledo · 15/10/2023 17:00

Regent St is good these days? Ok that's good.

Oxford Street is really, really horrible unless you just want to zip to John Lewis and Selfridges. Regent Street/Liberty nice if you can avoid the busiest times.

viques · 15/10/2023 18:00

I really like Marylebone High Street, lots of independent shops, cafes , restaurants, a cheese shop, a Conrans , a lovely little park ( with excellent toilets) if it’s a sunny day, a brilliant bookshop.

bevelino · 15/10/2023 18:03

Kings Road, Westbourne Grove are good shopping areas. You also have Westfield in Stratford and White City for lots of brands under one roof. Westfield White City is way better.

nc14 · 15/10/2023 18:03

King’s Road has Peter Jones and Me & Em. There’s a big Uniqlo not too far away in Kensington High Street which is next to a big Zara. I also like Westbourne Grove but it’s pricey. I never go to Oxford Street. It’s awful nowadays. If you’re going to Regent Street though I’d stop by Arket.

viques · 15/10/2023 18:03

And I forgot to say only a short walk from John Lewis.

Another good area is Sloane Square, big Peter Jones ( ie John Lewis) , a little but nice shopping area tucked away opposite ( forgotten the name of it) and plenty of other shops, cafes, restaurants there too.

Duke of York Square. Thankyou google.

@viques You’re thinking of Duke of York Square.

Indeed I am!

I like Convent Garden when in London

londonmummy1966 · 15/10/2023 19:01

If Oxford Street is convenient then go to John Lewis, cross the road for uniqlo and then walk down South Molton Street (Me &Em) and then shop up and down Regent Street - as well as Liberty there's Anthropologie, a big H&M Free People and a Zara Home

Changedmymind99 · 15/10/2023 19:26

Regent street, but take in Reserved just off Oxford Circus (it’s fab) and mango maybe?

Then as others have suggested head to Kings road and Sloane Square. Rixo etc is down there.

The coffee/pastry bar in Harrods is a fab place to people watch as a treat too.

wondabar · 15/10/2023 20:03

Kings Road and Carnaby Street for me. Everything I like between the two!

faffadoodledo · 18/10/2023 07:49

I can combine Kings Rd/Carnaby St with Oxford Circus/Regent St. That's good.

I enjoyed Sloane Sq area last time I was up so may repeat that too.

I have to say I haven't enjoyed Covent Garden since the 1990s! I just can't connect with it at all. Maybe it's me

But is JL Oxford St good for pretty much everything? Or has it gone a bit lack lustre lately?

faffadoodledo · 18/10/2023 07:52

Ooo and thank you @Changedmymind99 - Reserved looks great for DD, who wants to make her wardrobe more grown up. It's taken her a couple of years to move from dressing like a student to a professional! I'd never heard of that store tho I confess I do live far away in the sticks

Apart from a distinct lack of staff, it's still the same. I shop on Oxford Street but only for JL, Uniqlo and sometimes Superdry, Selfridges and M&S. Regent Street isn't bad, ditto for Covent Garden.

I love Marylebone High Street but not good for teenage shopping. Nice place to dip off Oxford Street for lunch.

I'm not personally a fan but Westfield is probably the mecca for teenagers.

sep135 · 18/10/2023 08:10

Sorry, having reread your post, I misread it and thought your daughter was 15...

faffadoodledo · 18/10/2023 08:16

Don't worry @sep135 - in fact she often gets carded because she looks 15! The shopping expedition is partly to make her feel more grown up I think! Whereas I'm looking to try and move out of my middle aged lane!
We're staying in Marylebone so I'll def be stepping out there for a browse.

OP posts:
sep135 · 18/10/2023 08:23

Ah, I love Marylebone (I used to live in the less posh end).

The Bayley and Sage deli is worth a browse (it's enormous). I went in one of the charity shops on the high street last week and it was an eye opening experience (but expensive). I know the Ivy Cafe gets a mixed reaction on MN but the maitre d' at the one in Marylebone is an entertaining experience.

I'm sure you'll have a lovely time.

PrintersCourt · 18/10/2023 08:34

I discovered Stradivarius recently, sounds as they may suit you and your daughter. There’s a big one opposite JL on Oxford St but I think they’re in Westfield as well.

Flutterbye22 · 18/10/2023 09:12

Oxford / Regent Street
Battersea Power Station
Kings Road
West London Westfield

Flutterbye22 · 18/10/2023 09:13

Also, Selfridges
