Getting hair done for first time in years - is this doable?

I'm going to get my hair cut and maybe coloured.

Have attached photos of the type of colour I like but have no idea about these things. Im currently dark brown

Is this doable? And if so what do I ask for? Do I just show the pics?

The cut is possible, depending on your hair type. Colour….will either take a long time or more than 1 appointment depending on how well the bleach lifts your hair.

Ah yeah it was the colour I was after. Ideally I want something that can be done in one appointment.

Depends how dark you are, I’m very dark naturally and to have it lightened that much the first time took a few hours. Show the pictures and ask, your hairdresser will know whether they can do that in one go or not.

You're not blonde though, or even mousy blonde-brown, so it's unlikely ....

I might lighten it myself and then make an appointment and ask them to make it like the pictures

I wouldn't attempt to lighten it yourself. That could end in disaster. Is your hair natural or does it currently have colour in it? Natural hair will lift better than hair with colour on it already as that can make the result unpredictable.

No!! Don't. It'll be bleach on bleach. Potential to wreck your hair.

Talk to a properly qualified hairdresser. Take their advice - but it is likely to take a couple of appointments. And bleached hair is bleached hair - why try to have hair the colour it is not?

Fushair3 · 15/10/2023 17:58

Natural colour is very dark brown but currently have a semi black on it 😬

Basically I feel crap at the moment and want something new and different. Something that makes me feel good about myself. Wanted foils/highlights or something because one colour just feels flat

DON'T DO THAT

You'll just have to accept it might be more than one visit. How often are you planning on going to maintain it as it grows?

happylittlesloth · 15/10/2023 18:01

Go for something way more low maintenance if you haven't had it done for years

Alarae · 15/10/2023 18:03

I have my hair balayaged in Spring and the entire process takes about 4.5 hours. I have dark brown hair and she takes it to a nice blonde colour.

That was with completely virgin hair though- I think the semi-black might stop that.

FarEast · 15/10/2023 18:10

If you want to feel good about yourself, why not take up a new hobby? Spend the money you would have to sped on very high maintenance hair (which will cost a LOT) on something more long-lasting and productive. What have you always wanted to do? Ride a horse, go in a helicopter, learn a language, see a fab show, go away for the weekend? These are far better things to do for long term happiness with your life.

If you have a home dye job on your hair, they'll probably need to strip that out, then start again ... It'll be expensive & take a long time. About once a year I get a half-head of very white blonde highlights on my naturally blonde hair and it takes 3 hours. And costs at least £100.

I have hobbies and when I'm not doing the things I have to do, I fill my time with things I enjoy.

I need to feel better about myself and my appearance having neglected for so long.

But tbh I probably do need something low maintenance

Most hairdressers offer a free consultation so you can find out if it’s achievable on your hair and how much it will cost etc.

Laurdo · 15/10/2023 18:22

Maybe something like this would suit your natural hair colour better and be more achievable. It wouldn't be high maintenance as your natural hair would just blend in.

The last time I went to hairdresser having box dyed my hair they refused to bleach it. Did a strand test and said I had to wait until colour was all out before they'd touch it.

KeepForgetting · 15/10/2023 18:34

Go and have a consultation with a hairdresser. Choose one with good reviews or recommended by a friend. They will advise you what is achievable.

If you've got dark box dye on I wouldn't embark on a home bleach job. Blonde highlights/balayage may not be realistic for you at the moment, but they will be able to tell you what is possible and also if they are a good hairdresser, what colours would actually suit you.
