Shampoo - worth paying more?

I generally just buy whatever is on offer in the supermarket and the whole family use it (including bald husband, haha) - I don’t think I’ve ever spent more than £5 on a shampoo. Is it worth spending more? I’m considering treating myself to a bottle that only I use but I don’t want to waste my money. Generally I find all beauty products a bit ‘emperors new clothes’ but am I wrong? My hair is shoulder length, straight and not averagely thick/thin.

No. Not worth it. If they contain the same ingredients then they are the same product in either fancier packaging or with a different scent. Come on people we know this stuff! Look at the ingredients in your favourite shampoo and see how it differs (doesn't differ) from other products.

Save your money OP on shampoo, Tresemme etc are fine BUT it's worth splurging on conditioner. I've used Wella Fusion for years now, wouldn't change to anything else

muddyford · 15/10/2023 15:59

I find I don't need to use as much with the slightly more expensive ones .

Lovethatforyouhun · 15/10/2023 16:39

You can get cheapo ones and that dont have sulphates, parabens and silicone in eg Palmers now. I prefer to spend on masks and conditioners.

It depends on your hair/scalp. I have typical Asian hair, fairly coarse and very very thick. I use shampoos aimed at curly hair, as my hair is so thick I find anything else gives me dandruff, I vary my conditioner, at the moment I’m using living proof. One thing I always do is traditional oiling once a week, but I also do daily oiling as well.

I use Wella shampoo and conditioner. Made a huge difference to my hair colour. My hairdresser always comments that my hair is n such good condition. I wanted to save some money and purchased a "normal" shampoo and conditioner. It was horrendous!! My hair felt dry and brittle and dull. I quickly ordered another bottle of Wella 🤣

Me too. I use Wella Professionals from my hair salon. I use the sensitive shampoo and the colour care conditioner. Sometimes I try cheaper ones and end up going back to Wella. Is it the Professionals that you use?

xyz111 · 15/10/2023 21:48

@pussinboots61 yes I use this one. The bottle lasts ages so don't mind paying for it. Been using it a few years now, and every time I try and save money and buy cheaper shampoo, I always end up back with Wella.

@pussinboots61 @xyz111 those wella ones are often less than £20 in tk maxx

QueenOfHiraeth · 15/10/2023 21:58

My hair is very fine and soft with a tendency to go fluffy. I have never found any shampoo or conditioner that makes a positive difference, in fact my hair is better when washed less frequently

That's the one, though I use the sensitive shampoo in the blue bottle as my scalp is very itchy and I just use conditioner on the ends. I use the smaller sized bottles though from the salon.

I use redken all soft it’s about 30-40£ for shamp and cond.

if I ever use supermarket shampoos (even the sensitive or sulphate free ones) I come up with a rash on my neck, sometimes my back and privates and I have itchy ear canals.

theres something in them that my skin does not like.

BCSurvivor · 17/10/2023 10:35

@BeansOnToast32 I use Davines Nou Nou - always manage to pick it up cheaply on Ebay as it was in the Liberty Beauty Drop box in the Spring, and so many people seem to be selling it on on Ebay.
It smells amazing too.

LolaSmiles · 17/10/2023 10:44

When I used to have a lot of highlights I found using the MOP C system line was worth it. I also used Aveda as well and liked those.

I like to avoid parabens and sulphates because they don't work for my hair, but I've found some cheaper shampoos (Umberto Gianni ones) as good as other more expensive ones.

Emmmmz9 · 17/10/2023 12:45

Anybody tried Coco and Eve?
Keeps popping up on social media

HanSB · 17/10/2023 12:59

I think it depends on your hair type. Mine is naturally very shiny, fine and straight and the more expensive shampoos seem to be aimed at thicker more unruly hair so just weigh mine down. I don’t ever use conditioner as it’s too heavy for my hair. I have tried all sorts of expensive shampoo brands but the only one I like is Malibu which is a shampoo for hard water. Softer water always makes my hair feel lighter and better.

MillTree · 29/10/2023 19:39

An update from me. I bought some Opalex with some birthday vouchers earlier this month. Have used four and five three times now, plus the treatment three once. I can report: hair feels and looks amazing. Soft and shiny. My hair is thick and naturally curly. It really has made a big difference.

StarlightLady · 29/10/2023 20:22

@MillTree - I’m pleased it has worked. But l still wonder if it wii be the same in the longer term as your hair “gets used” to it. Only frequent changes work for my hair.

I bought some Olaplex a couple of weeks ago, and my hair seems to dropping hugely less than its usual rate - will be interesting to see if it continues.

GlamGiraffe · 29/10/2023 21:48

I use kerastase. I have a huge amount of very fine long hair. It is the only product with which my hair is manageable and not a giant mass if knots and not really dulled down and heavy from the coating other conditioners seem to leave. I think I've probably tried the majority of other products available on the high street and the difference is enormous. I buy the one litre bottles as it works out much better value.

GonnaGetGoingReturns · 29/10/2023 22:16

I can’t think of the name of the volumising shampoo and conditioner I got recently in a salon (expensive, pink square bottles) but it’s very good. I don’t have to use a lot of conditioner like I do with cheaper brands. As it came to just under £40 for 2 bottles I’m not sure if I’ll keep using it but am sure I can find salon range which is cheaper but just as good.

I used to use Redken All Soft and it was amazing for my dry highlighted hair, a hairdresser recommended it to me due to the avocado oil in it. Not sure why I changed.

Redken CAT is great for when hair is really damaged.
