Little Black Dress?

Help me please.
I have an evening invite to a wedding in a few weeks. We're getting babysitters and I really want to look good .
I'm thinking along the idea of little black dress with heels.
I have a big bum and hips size 14/16 but am smaller up top.
I'm 30 and can't do top shop but don't want anything too mumsy/frumpy. Where are we supposed to shop?
It's easier to research online before i venture to the shops as the kids have limited tolerance of that sort of thing.
Anyone seen anything while out and about in the real world?

I was really impressed with the sale prices at Ghost - some lovely dresses there, at quite reasonable prices.

luciemule · 07/03/2008 17:40

have a look at monsoon and laura ashley (don't laugh they have some really nice unfrumpy stuff) websites, as well as m & S and Next all for up to date dresses.

Oli have some fab stuff too, along with La Redoute, if you prefer shopping online.

With a big bum and smaller top (like me), I'd go for something that nips in under the bust and drops so not sticking to your bum.

Wouldthis suit my body shape?

Coast

lots of lbds

dragonbutter · 07/03/2008 18:11

Thanks. I'll take a look once the kids are in bed and i've got a nice glass of wine.

I think yes, it would suit your shape as long as the majority of weight isn't on the sides of your top thighs - as this dress is more bias cut and would stick around that area. But if it's only your bum you're worried about then I thinkvit would flatter.

I love Oli and with some very pretty heels - that dress would look great.

So I went to the shops this morning and quite liked this one.
It fitted nice and I got away with a 14. The 16 was too big on the top and because it is stretchy the 14 looked fine on the bottom.
But is this a reasonable price??? It's so expensive, especially as I still have to buy the shoes and underwear.
Anybody seen anything else similar anywhere?

It is a lot, isn't it. Gorgeous though - I love the unexpected low back .

JackieNo · 08/03/2008 16:41

Not quite, but maybe?

dragonbutter · 08/03/2008 18:17

Oh dear, don't think i could get away with the straight cut off sleeveless bit. My arms need some careful dressing too.

I'm wondering if it might be cheaper to go with a seperate skirt and top?

I got the trinny and susannah body shape bible for mothers day and I'm confused what shape I am. Am I definitely one of those shapes?

I think the Ghost stuff is a bit loose and there's the risk of still looking pregnant. Thanks though.

My other thoughts, as now i've got to also get something to wear for the hen night is that if i got a skirt and top then it would be cheaper to get just two different tops rather than two whole outfits and wear the same shoes etc.

this
with this?? Actually works out more expensive for this outfit but might work for both occasions?

I bought a fab dress at Kew a little while ago...will see if I can find a link...

nailpolish · 08/03/2008 18:33

the coast annora dress is so beautiful and i really dont think its too expensive - if you think you will have it for years and i bet you wear it again - you can dress it up differently

pencil skirts are a good choice too imo if you arent dead keen on any dresses when you try them on

MaryAnnSingleton · 08/03/2008 18:34

ok - check on my profile - it's longer on me and I don't wear it with beret !

dragonbutter · 08/03/2008 18:51

It's really nice maryannsingleton but I have a bulgy belly from the c-sections and too many cakes thereafter. I think tailored is better for me. (and your DS is cute too, sorry had to sneak a peak)

I've been losing weight steadily since christmas and am glad the dress is in a size 14 as I should get more wear out of it. I'm hoping to not need any size 16 stuff ever again but think it's fairly wishful thinking to expect to get back to a 12 but you never know.

But £115 seems so much when we need so many other things for the house. But i literally have nothing to wear to the wedding and really want to go. Help me justify it please.

you deserve to treat yourself you really do!

do you already have some shoes and bag you can wear? you can save money possibly on that?

MaryAnnSingleton · 08/03/2008 19:28

definitely treat yourself - it's good for the spirit

MaryAnnSingleton · 08/03/2008 19:32

I really like the Oli one btw

JackieNo · 08/03/2008 19:33

I'd say go for it too - it is gorgeous.

dragonbutter · 11/03/2008 21:52

I bought it!
My justification being that the hen night is this friday with the wedding a few weeks later. If I buy too outfits it'll cost more than just this dress which I can wear to both. I'll wear a funky belt with it for the hen do.
Problem solved! Thanks everyone.
And now to find shoes........

Found some black heels. Hush puppies.
