Suggestions please! Clothes for labour and after

This is a stupid but I'm worrying about what to wear for labour and when I leave the hospital.

I'm 34 weeks with my first, and currently only have maternity jeans and dungerees that are a bit too tight.

What do people wear when they're in labour? And what should I wear after? I've only had the suggestion of leggings but I don't like leggings...

any ideas? Links would be appreciated? I'm a very largely pregnant size 12 and like loose, non-frilly clothing

I ended up in my husband's freebie Guinness t shirt he'd brought home from the pub to labour in, then I think that got binned after getting covered in all kinds of gunk. I have no idea what I came home in as I had no concept of day or night, never mind clothes for weeks afterwards.

So, something very comfy and possibly disposable for giving birth, and very comfy and clean for coming home.

CharlotteRumpling · 12/10/2023 20:46

No concept of day, night or clothes is about right.

shakeitoffsis · 12/10/2023 20:47

Big t shirt and pants in labour or hospital
Gown.
I wore my normal clothes, joggers or leggings when I came home. I didn't have a bump though which is not the case for most.

Doggymummar · 12/10/2023 20:48

My ex sil was sat up in bed in size 8 Levi's about two hours after giving birth, the lucky cow, but massive t shirt and soft elasticated leggings or joggers is the wtg

FeedingFrenzy5 · 12/10/2023 20:49

My husband bought me a t-shirt with a superwoman logo on it for giving birth. It was size XXXL or something so fit over my bump and down to my thighs. I wore the same tshirt for all 3 of my deliveries and now wear it around the house sometimes and whenever I do I tell my kids the story of the t-shirt!

BHRK · 12/10/2023 20:51

Hush harem pants, the stretchy sort. They are really comfy worn under the bump and then for coming home. I bought cheap M&S vests so I could change easily
plus a cosy new hoody. Flip flops for the ward and showers

Something you don’t care about for giving birth in! It will probably need to be binned afterwards. I wore a massive Primark tee shirt.

Im afraid I wore my maternity dungarees home from hospital. Unfortunately you don’t shrink back down instantly Sad

WeWereInParis · 12/10/2023 20:54

Are you planning on breastfeeding? If so, some button down nighties/pj tops for hospital will be useful. And some cheap soft pj bottoms. I left hospital in pj trousers, and pj top with a cardigan over the top both times.
I gave birth in a long pj top/nightie thing with buttons. I threw it away afterwards as it was a bit bloody.

I assume people suggest leggings because size matters a bit less (in terms of them staying up). I wore my pre-pregnancy size pj bottoms immediately after giving birth both times, but I had no way of predicting that that was the size I'd need so I also took some maternity ones.

I wore one of dh T-shirts with my first and for my second I took my joggers and knickers off as soo as I got in there but refused to take my T-shirt and vest off! I still wear the T-shirt.
afterwards black knickers and joggers and t shirts
A button up night shirt is often recommended for labour and easy breastfeeding. There’s always a risk of a cs so granny pants that come upto your belly button are a good idea as you done want anything that presses on the scar. Likewise is you have an episiotomy you don’t want tight trousers or leggings (I’ve had both)

WhereAreWeNow · 12/10/2023 21:13

Something you don't mind binning after! I wore an old nightie. I honestly can't remember what I wore home. It was a blur.

Findyourneutralspace · 12/10/2023 21:17

I had one of those massive T-shirt nighties for labour. Once your knickers are off for the first examination there isn’t much point putting them back on. For after the birth, comfy PJs if you’re staying in or something like leggings, joggers etc for going home.
You just want comfort after you’ve given birth.

Decafcaramellatte · 12/10/2023 21:32

For birth I had a Primark nightie that they replaced with a hospital gown when things got complicated. Nightie was lost. I had a nursing maxi for the journey home and the days after. I still wanted to feel comfy and a bit like myself.

gotomomo · 12/10/2023 21:39

Wear the gown they will provide!

Take clothes that fit you now to leave the hospital

WonkyBricks · 12/10/2023 22:14

First labour I wore shorts and a vest. Then for coming home my maternity jeans or just some loose joggers (can't remember but had both in my bag).

Second birth I was wearing my PJs (home birth) so baggy lounge pants and vest plus probably my dressing gown for a large part of it. I bought myself some nice Frugi nursing PJs for post birth- they were high waisted and super comfy. Would have been fine after a CS too.

DelurkingAJ · 12/10/2023 22:18

I wore much too large jogging bottoms from memory. And I had an old tshirt to give birth in that rapidly came off. Nursing top after. I bought a pack of black cotton granny pants from Tesco in a couple of sizes too large and wore them in the days after.

SylvieLaufeydottir · 12/10/2023 22:27

I wore nursing vests and button-up shirts after having the baby with soft joggers. I breastfed as planned so it was all about easy access.

I was naked in labour. The first time anyway. The second time I honestly don't remember, but I think I had a hospital gown. You won't have any bottoms on, because they'll be checking your dilation, and you will probably be hot and fairly intolerant of any constriction. Giant t-shirt or loose nightie work, but honestly many people do just strip it all off.

Its5656 · 12/10/2023 22:28

I wore the gown the hospital provided for labour and just my regular clothes home.. make sure you have some Comfortable knickers and pyjamas.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 12/10/2023 22:34

I planned on wearing a button Down type nighty for labour and delivery so could do skin to skin. In realty I was naked with a sheet over the top of me. Wasn't what I planned but that's what happened. Had to bin my trainers as I had left them under bed and they were absolutely soaked in blood thanks to PPH.

Coming home I wore massive knickers and a maternity maxi dress first time.

Second time I wore a gown for labour with ELCS and coming home loose maternity tshirt and maternity joggers.

Hottytotty · 12/10/2023 22:40

This is a bit outing but I gave birth to my DS2 in my maternity denim skirt as he came so quickly I didn’t get around to taking it off 😂
For the other two it was an old T shirt as others have said, and soft maternity clothes to go home in. Perhaps worth slinging in a bikini top if you’re considering a water birth and would like one (midwives won’t turn a hair whatever you’re wearing).

bluebeardswife7 · 12/10/2023 22:47

I ❤️ the fact you put it in style and beauty, but the answer is something really comfy you are happy to bin after.

VikingLady · 12/10/2023 22:48

Big XXL t shirt style nightshirt for giving birth. Though both times once I was in established Labour I stripped off (I genuinely don't know why, but it's apparently not an uncommon urge). Or a maternity/breastfeeding nightie that you can pop a boob out of easily for afterwards.

You can still wear maternity clothes after the birth. You don't lose the weight immediately. Though I went for jersey dresses.

Snugglemonkey · 12/10/2023 23:01

I had to have sections, so hospital gowns for delivery. I bought nighties with buttons for the hospital. I wore a maternity/nursing dress home from the hospital both times. Maybe even the same dress!

RampantIvy · 13/10/2023 07:59

I just wore a huge T-shirt nightie that I had bought at the market. It had buttons down the front so that I could breastfeed.

Junibug · 13/10/2023 08:07

Started off in a big nightie but got too hot so just stripped down to my comfy sports bra. You won't care what you're wearing, believe me. Something you can chuck preferably as you never know what it'll get covered in 🤪

RampantIvy · 13/10/2023 08:25

Oh, and socks. My feet were freezing. It isn't unusual to have cold feet at this time.
