Just HOW skinny is the Coast model?

here

Sick of size0allbonenofleshunhealthylookingmatchstick models.
At least I have boobs. And a tummy. And woobly thighs. And a large arse.

And I find the relentless assumption that all models are 'size 0' and 'at least I have boobs and hips' offensive, spiteful and bitter.

Feeling shitty about your body comes from inside.

So instead of blaming others who are just making a living at selling clothes because they happen to be tall and slim - and the vast majority of models don't have eating disorders, they're just like that - wouldn't it be better to focus on feeling more positive about who you are from the inside?

And for the thousandth time, I'd challenge anyone who find a professional model - because most agencies won't take women under 5ft.,8 in. and some have minimum height requirememts of 5ft., 9in. who is 'size 0'.

Good luck!

You have to be short to fit into that size - Kylie and Victoria Beckham, for example, who are 5ft. 0in and 5ft., 3in.

The whole notion that a 6ft. tall woman is size 0 is a myth perpetuated by the media, who sees skinny people as a soft target because they'd never get away with slagging obese folks in the same way.

noddyholder · 07/03/2008 17:00

I don't know why we can't just accept that models are thin like basketball players are tall and tehy are the best person for the job

meemar · 07/03/2008 17:02

noddy - it's not that simple. I don't think men have the same insecurites about not looking like a basketball player

OrmIrian · 07/03/2008 17:03

I must admit that at nearly 6ft tall I'd be dead at a size 0 - because they would have to have removed my vital organs and a few of my larger bones to make me that size! I'm a 12 and quite happy with that. And not fat.

I think that you are right expat. We need to be more accepting of what we are. But so do the media.

nailpolish · 07/03/2008 17:03

yes i agree mp the girl just needs to sort her posture

expatinscotland · 07/03/2008 17:03

i don't look at bodies like that and see them as 'aspirational', mp, because i know that they're hired because the clothes hand better on them.

and so i don't think for one minute that that's what i need to be like to be attractive.

why?

because i grew up with a family who gave me the self-esteem to realise the difference between media images and who i am.

a much worthier target, IMO, giving girls self-confidence and respect irrespective of the media.

nailpolish · 07/03/2008 17:05

when did we all become american anyway? wtf is all this "size )" talk??????????? that annoys me

(expat excepted )

nailpolish · 07/03/2008 17:05

that should be "size 0"

2happy · 07/03/2008 17:05

expat I apologised for causing offense. I object to being called spiteful.

I don't object to being called bitter, because I probably am. I was called fatty 2happy by my fucking family since I was a toddler. I'm as size fucking 14 12, I'm just built bigger than my sisters. People are cruel, if I can laugh and say at least I have boobs to try and make myself feel better, then whatever. Bitter I am.

expatinscotland · 07/03/2008 17:07

also, too, a model is hired to pose the way the photographer wants her to.

that's her job. put on the clothes, sit still whilst your hair and makeup are styled the way the photographer or editor wants and then move your body and pin the expressions on your face the way the photographer wants.

if she thinks it's cheesy, too bad. that's what she's paid to do.

noddyholder · 07/03/2008 17:07

my ds is not very tall and loves basketball. This came about as he played it at centreparcs and was brilliant at it when he was about 7 and was excited when he saw it on the curriculum for PE and couldn't understand why he wasn't chosen

expatinscotland · 07/03/2008 17:09

People pick on my child because she is tall and slim. Call her 'bag of bones' or 'boney' or giraffe legs.

It happens.

But it's important as a parent to make her understand that no matter what, people will find a reason to mock you.

They'll find something, they always do.

Even siblings do it to each other.

I don't want her growing up bitter and hating who she is - it's very unlikely she can change her body type - because of things like this.

Because it's setting someone up to be really miserable and that's not good considering it's ALWAYS going to happen, to everyone, sooner or later.

expatinscotland · 07/03/2008 17:12

Was reading some comments in The Times recently from the supermodel Erin O'Connor, who is 6ft., 1in. and size 12-14.

Since the media started all that Size O nonsense, she said she's had her integrity called into question more times than not, asked if she menstruates, can she get pregnant, what she eats, etc.

Shocking.

meemar · 07/03/2008 17:24

I agree with expat that modelling is a 'job', and it's wrong to blame the models for women's insecurites.

But as the model is the end product of the media image of what is ideal, then sadly she is often the target of the frustration and critisism.

I think the recent drive to help women love themselves whatever their size (programmes like how to look good naked) has clashed with the whole 'size zero' phenomenon, and now there has been a backlash against models who appear to be too thin.

morningpaper · 07/03/2008 17:45

hmm there is a lot that is shocking with the issue of women and models

But I don't think that the suffering of Erin O'Connor is right up there

SheherazadetheGoat · 07/03/2008 17:47

lol @ mp.

JodieG1 · 07/03/2008 18:03

I really don't think that Erin O'Connor is anywhere near a size 12 regardless of her height. From what I've read she is a size 6 (not sure if that is US or USA) and weighs about 9 stone.

Wisteria · 07/03/2008 18:09

Personally I think she looks great!

I'm with expat on this, I have a few friends who are a natural size 6 or zero and they get completely fed up with the attitudes they receive - incidentally they all eat like little piggies as well - It isn't a given that these super thin models have eating disorders.

morningpaper · 07/03/2008 18:11

Wikipedia says she is a size 6

She claims she is a "10-12"

but we ALL say that

2happy · 07/03/2008 18:16

But the point (for me, not for everyone, clearly) isn't about whether or not all models are naturally skinny or not. The point is that it is the ones who are more than averagely slim who are models and are put on pedestels for young people to aspire to. The Dove adverts may verge on nauseating at times, but they do give a certain balance.

OP posts:
chonky · 07/03/2008 18:24

Hear hear expat. I'm 5'11" and a size 12 (BMI 21). Whilst I can rationalise now that if I was scaled down to 5'4" I'd probably be a size 10, I found it hugely difficult in my teens to come to terms with the fact that I was a "whopping" size 12.
It's took me a long time to realise that it was OK to not look cute and petite. Ironically I LOVE being tall now - people tend to remember you.

However I can't believe that Erin is really a 12-14 though, I look farrrr curvier than she is (unfortunately!).

Wisteria · 07/03/2008 18:25

I know what you're saying 2happy - but I think the balance is being redressed slowly - I am noticing more curvier women in ads and magazines lately.

The clothes are thought to be shown off to their best advantage on the super thin models and you're not distracted by a huge pair of norks - taking your attention away from the clothes (in the opinion of the designers anyway).

Wisteria · 07/03/2008 18:26
expatinscotland · 07/03/2008 18:28

Wiki has been known to not be 100% accurate.

OrmIrian · 07/03/2008 18:28

chonky - I feel just the same. I refused to weigh myself as a teenager because no matter how slim I was, the fact that those bloody scales always said 10s something! And my best friend was a little fairy creature And like you I love being tall now. I am happier now that I'm a 12 rather than a 16 as I was after DS#2 was born mind you.
