Outfit ideas for a 38yo man

Hello MN style gurus,

I think I finally convinced DH that there may be more in men's clothing than polo shirts and v-neck sweaters. We were unpacking his autumn/winter clothes and realized he is really overdue an update.

He is 38, tall and slim (not muscular), blond with green eyes. The best way to describe his day-to-day style is classic. He wears suits (as in - full suit/tie/cufflinks package) to office, but we would appreciate (ok, mostly I would appreciate!) some ideas for out and about outfits (think - walks, running errands, parents evenings, date nights etc).

One thing I know for a fact he wouldn't wear are joggers - he is just not sporty at all and he claims he feels like a 'fake' when he tries to wear them even around the house. He is partial to jeans over chinos (and I'm partial to white and black t-shits under shackets, but that's off topic).

So can you please share some ideas of good outfits?

Can you imagine if a man came on here saying he’d finally convinced his wife there was more in women’s clothing than v neck T-shirts and sweatshirts?!

There may be some things DH wears that I don’t love, but he can wear what he likes and what he’s comfortable in. If he ever tried to tell me I couldn’t wear what I am comfortable in he would not get a polite response.

I got some stuff for my dp recently, Zara and Levi's straight slim ish leg jeans, lots of quality whit t shirts and worker jackets/ shirts or chord shirts to wear open over the top.
Zara and uniqlo are worth a look.

This was meant to be lighthearted and hopefully clear that my DH is in agreement that he needs
am update and wouldn’t hurt to see what’s out there. He’s not my doll and I’m not dressing him or
telling him what to wear- I’m simply offering him ideas to consider before he goes shopping.

Not sure where you got the idea I’m telling him not to wear something.

Thanks. I know
Uniqlo has good T-shirts but Zara is a good
shout too!

Dh buys a lot of things from Selected online, and he dresses very nicely. Quite low key.

No joggers; I agree with him, they are the domain of teenage boys and sporty types.

Also, on a similar basis, he probably doesn't like hoodies.
Dh wears a nice plain cotton sweatshirt with either jeans or some chino style trousers or cords,
If you have £££ to throw at his rebrand, I would definitely say buy a pair of very nice jeans; Edwin, Nudie or something? Definitely avoid whiskering or bleaching on jeans.
I like a smart round neck cotton long sleeved jumper in a plain colour, navy, dark green, with a bit of white t-shirt showing at the neck; I think it's stylish.
M & S is fab for good quality plain crew neck cotton or wool jumpers. I just found the link and the model is doing exactly what I described! www.marksandspencer.com/pure-extra-fine-merino-wool-crew-neck-jumper/p/clp60548336?color=DARKEVERGREEN#intid=pid_pg1pip48g2r2c2|prodflag_New

Tbh I don't think you can go too far wrong with Autograph at M & S

ArtyStripedSocks · 13/10/2023 10:22

Although I would say that you should size up a bit. All the M & S pics look very slim fitting and obvs that's the look at the mo, but I'm not a fan. Looks a bit naff and probs a bit too much of a statement for your oh

IndianSummer78 · 13/10/2023 14:57

This is horrible. He sounds clean and tidy. There's nothing wrong with classic clothes and they fit him, suit his personality etc. You've got him trying clothes so far removed from who he is that he feels "fake". Why would you even do this to someone you love? He so obviously doesn't want to change his style, you do. Get yourself another hobby, he's not a doll for you to dress up. You're treating him like he's an accessory to your life. Just leave him alone to wear whatever he wants.

Boska23 · 13/10/2023 15:38

@ArtyStripedSocks - thanks will pass on these links to DH to look.

@IndianSummer78 , for heaven's sake - reading comprehension challenge or are you just looking for someone to attack? If you have bothered to read, rather than just skim my post and/or update you would have seen that this was lighthearted. I do not 'make' my DH wear anything and I do not mind anything he does wear. He is due an update because he wore out some of his clothes and he was open to trying something new - which is why I asked for ideas - TO PASS ONTO HIM. I did not get him to try clothes that make him feel fake - that would be his dear mother who got him joggers. I personally don't like that look either.

Just ignore the meanies. There are some on every thread. They have nothing better to do,

TizerorFizz · 13/10/2023 16:42

@Boska23 I totally get what you mean. DH is 70 but we still discuss his clothes. He dresses pretty well!

I am a big fan of the better quality M&S shirts. Cotton but no iron. DH likes them with chinos or dark denim jeans. He’s tried on lots of styles to get the right cut of Jean and currently the M&S stretch ones at £45 have come up trumps. He likes Loake shoes. High quality, comfortable and last well! He’s also quite keen on long sleeve t shirts under check shirts or thicker over shirts. Loads around and most look good if you coordinate colours. I think this look is more modern than shirt and pullover.

Always go for a decent reefer jacket or pea coat. A very good waterproof jacket or quilt jacket (Barbour) and a cashmere scarf or two. They are excellent Christmas presents. Don’t forget a decent watch.

Sometimes the weekend newspapers do male fashion and the M&S web site gives looks which are mainstream and suit many men who want a refresh.

Brands worth a look are Cos, Arket, Massimo Dutti and Reiss. DH likes Gant, and we visit local men’s shops for something different. Usually for shirts and shoes! I appreciate my DH is older but I think good style and quality still matter whatever your age.

Supportyourlocal · 14/10/2023 15:34

My DH is a similar age and his favourite brands are Tribal society ( he loves the jeans and I just brought myself a rucksack from there) Arne,White threads and Lost soles. none of these sell the kind of things Your DH currently wears and are a bit more youthful and more modern to what he currently wears

TizerorFizz · 14/10/2023 18:38

£120 for jeans is a bit steep if you are not sure about a change of look.
