Undercut to thin down extremely thick hair?

Hi MN. I have got very, very thick (South Asian) hair. It's coarse and frizzy as well. It's kind of wavy but not In a beautiful, regular way. I can't do anything with it but tie it up in a pony tail as it's too thick to leave it open. I'm so fed up of always having a pony tail though and even that doesn't look great with my thick hair.

I sometimes get it thinned using shearing scissors but that's also not enough to actually leave it open. I hate styling it or having to blow dry or straighten it. I want a hair style where I can just wash and dry. At the most I don't mind putting some product in my hair but strictly no drying or straightening.

I just read somewhere about undercuts and I wonder if this would help. Does anyone have any experience of undercuts? Is this better than using thinning scissors? Would the undercut bit be seen if I tie my hair in a pony tail or is there a way to hide it? Are there any other hair styles I could do (at home) that hide the shaved bits?

I'd love to have my hair shorter but currently need the length to weigh it down a bit. With an undercut might I actually be able to have shoulder length hair?

Thanks!!

I've got long and thick hair - equally blessed and cursed.

One hairdresser absolutely ruined my hair with thinning scissors. Never again.

Undercuts are an option but a severe one if you wear your hair up.

Another option is to have a panel at the back of my head (think rectangle) cut to shorter length (in my case around 3" length, the same width and around 1" depth). This drastically reduces weight and volume, can still wear it up and doesn't require upkeep like an undercut does.

This may not solve all your problems but was revolutionary for me!

I did this for exactly this reason- my hair is very thick and it was just too much. But an undercut is a real pain. I regretted it so much! It grows so quickly and even if it's a bit overgrown, it looks weird, a bit like you're wearing a wig over short hair. It can get itchy if your hair is really thick, because the long hairs irritate the shorter hairs. And growing it out is an absolute nightmare. I HATED that bit.

Thanks for the reply. So is the panel like an undercut but instead of shaving it or trimming it very short, the hair is 3 inches long? Wouldn't that also be seen if you tie up your hair?

If I tie my pony tail fairly low I think I might be able to hide the undercut. Not sure. I'd probably have to ask a hair dresser

That's the other thing putting me off. At the moment I go to a hair dresser maybe once a year but with an undercut apparently needs trimming every two weeks. Though if a hair dresser did it the first time maybe dh could do the subsequent times.

This is where I went wrong, thinking I could get a family member to do the upkeep, but it's really hard to keep to the exact line, I'd either end up with longer untrimmed bits around the edges, or a bit more of my long hair would be taken away.

The panel doesn't sit at the bottom of the hairline - there's about 1.5" between the bottom of my panel and my hairline - so it can't be seen when hair is up. It's revolutionary!

If it's thick, coarse and wavy then have you considered doing curly girl with it to make the most of the waves?

If you absolutely went nuts with conditioner on it you might find you have desirable waves instead of annoying frizz.
