How do you wear shirts?

I've got a lot of nice shirts but never wear them because 1. I hate ironing and 2. I've got no idea how. I don't want to tuck them into my trousers, jeans or skirts and I'm not sure I can wear them untucked. They are shirts with buttons and they aren't shaped at the bottom (I mean they aren't rounded. They are like men's shirts that men would normally tuck in).

Can I just let them hang down? What do other people do?

  1. Hang on a hanger and use a steamer (not as good a finish as ironing but lots easier) and 2. Leave the bottom two or three buttons unbuttoned and tie in the front, then sometimes tuck the tied bit in to give a cleaner look. If that makes sense?

I'm not keen on any kind of tucking in. Also, this is for office wear so it shouldn't look too casual

For the office I would personally always tuck - at least a half tuck, but probably full tuck unless the shirt really sits nicely and us shaped to be untucked. But that depends on what your office dress code/culture is.

I don't like the 'squashed' tucked in look,so I buy shirts with a little bit of body/looseness around the waist area. I tuck it in fully but then pull it back out a bit, iyswim, so that the shirt is looser then gathered in at the waist.

Ah sorry just saw no tucking. Ok in that case I'd probably get a belt, and wear it over the untucked shirt - would that work for you?

Well if you don't want to tuck at all you don't really have any options here? When I say tucked I literally just mean stick the dangly bits in at the waistband, then pull the shirt up to sit a bit looser round your waist - it doesn't look too casual, it looks like this when you tie it, and then if you shove the dangly bits in the waistband (pull left to right side and vice versa) it looks fully tucked without actually being. Give it a try at least.

Alternatively you could try the bra tuck or hair bobble tie - see

Yes, I don't want to tuck in anything at all. I am too self conscious of my bottom and my thighs and like to wear tops that cover them. I kind of vaguely remember wearing similar shirts in my twenties alwaYs untucked but now I wonder if it looks untidy or ignorant (which I kind of am when it comes to clothes).

My question I guess is with a shirt that isn't shaped at the bottom but just straight (but also not super loose) can I just let it hang out?

My office is very casual if that helps. Jeans and trainers are ok though most women at least dress smarter than that. I don't remember seeing many tucked in shirts though. But then since covid I've been mostly working from home so who knows what people wear now??

Outside the office can I leave it untucked?

You could wear some sort of vest top or t shirt under it and leave it undone maybe?

Sometimes the length makes a difference, whether untucked or tucked. Experiment with pins to see what feels best for you. You can shorten them or shape them at the bottom if it would look better.

How would I shape them at the bottom? Do you mean by restitching the bottom or something like that?

If your office is jeans-trainers level casual then I'm pretty sure there'd be no issue with an untucked shirt, surely? Just go for it. You can pop another top in your bag if you get there and change your mind.
