Is it worth investing in a gadget and can anyone recommend one please.

watching with interest ….
I’ve got 2 different types and I wouldn’t say either does a very satisfactory job.
One is a small comb type thing that was given to me in a shop that I returned a sweater to because it pilled, and the other is a battery operated thing that I bought from Lakeland.
The comb removes the pilling ok but leaves the surface looking smooth and shiny. Also, presumably because I am too heavy handed I’ve pulled threads on more than one occasion that have made holes.
The machine from Lakeland is razor like in that you rotate it over the pilling. It captures the fluff it removes within a chamber that then has to be emptied. The chamber quickly fills and the sweaters look superficially OK but the pilling quickly returns
I’ve read that with cashmere the pilling should gradually become less but I haven’t found this to be true.

I have a battery powered one which was about a tenner from Amazon and it does an excellent job. I sell secondhand clothes and this time of year involves a lot of debobbling! I find it dull and increasingly difficult actually as I seem to be developing an allergy to wool, but you can rescue some really quite awful looking knits with some time and patience. A bit of bobbling is pretty much inevitable on wool but it’s really worth the effort.
