Hair - Box Dyes, fading too fast, how to stop?

So I colour my own hair with a permanent box dye colour (brown).

The problem is, it always washes up within a month! I usually use Garnier Olia as I love the shade (like a medium neutral brown) I have tried a few different dyes but don’t like them (either too dark or too red).

I follow the instructions on the box & because the colour washes up I do have to colour all my hair, so I apply to my roots first, leave for ten minutes then apply to my lengths & leave for 20 minutes.

I don’t wash the colour out, I just use the conditioner & don’t wash my hair for 2days, to let the dye ‘sit’ in. I use a colour safe shampoo, usually Pantene biology or L’Oréal elvive & tend to wash my hair every other day, or two days if I can leave it.

My hair isn’t in the best of condition due to colouring & heat styling - I do blow dry my hair & run straighteners through.

I also have the sticking up bits on top, I don’t know what you call it, it is just frizz? My hair never lays smooth, it’s like I’ve rubbed it with a balloon on top, iykwim? How to I get rid of that?!

You really shouldn't leave dye in ,you are over processing your hair. Sounds like you have very dry porous hair and need to see a hairdresser for some conditioning treatments.

To be clear, I do rinse the dye out, after the specified time, condition & rinse. I don’t leave it in for two days!

I’ll look into some conditioning treatments, are there any that won’t strip the colour?

Sounds like you have a lot of broken damaged hair which happens with over processed hair. Deep conditioning treatments will help as would a good cut.

Get John Frieda Davy Grey shampoo and conditioner to prolong the colour. It's really effective on my hair. I've stopped colouring now.

Defy not Davy!

Yes I don’t find box dyes ever ‘permanent’.

Sometimes I use these to ‘top up’ the colour

I had this issue and my hairdresser used a special shampoo on me that removes build up and metal, left it on for a while. Then did an Olaplex treatment on it and cut it. My hair felt sooo much better afterwards, she said there was a big build up of colour on it. Since I had that done a few months ago my colour has lasted better and hair looks in better condition generally.

Additionally though I always find with brown dye that I have to go a shade darker than I’d ideally like as the mid shades don’t last long at all and fade to a gingery colour really easily. It’s annoying!

You've wrecked your hair so it won't hold on to the dye. Mine does the same so I've had to grow it out, wash it, deep conditioning, no rough towel dry just wrap head and squeeze, no heat at all. I wrap it up in big hair wraps and just leave it be. Soon I'll get it cut and see what's what.

There's no repairing that kind of damage, it has to come off.

CalistoNoSolo · 08/10/2023 21:04

It's not the colour that's damaging your hair so much as the heat from drying and straightening. I dye my hair blonde every six weeks and it's smooth and shiny. The colour stays put but it does get porous at the ends so I get it cut every eight weeks too. I don't ever use heat on it. Do you have to use straighteners and can you blow dry on the cool setting?

ChishiyaBat · 08/10/2023 23:49

Just use the colour on your regrowth and use a semi permanent on your midlength and ends, you can top it up with the semi whenever you feel it needs it.

Branleuse · 09/10/2023 07:28

Try changing to age defy hair dye and see if that helps. I find it sticks better to grey hair . I think that 4/6 weeks is a normal amount of time before it needs doing again though.

If you are worried about the condition, then maybe try using a semi permanent dye instead of permanent as will condition it better

Thank you everyone, I’ll cut back on the heat & get a good trim and look into some semi’s for future use.
