Why do you need something to tell people you're a 'serious' business woman🤔

I don't I just need it to not say I'm not a serious business woman I'm a junior feel free to not listen a word that comes out my mouth

I'm sure you would subconsciously if it was a ridiculous bag

if someone rocked up with a kids bag I would probably think it was odd but your picture looked like a normal bag. Perhaps you are over thinking it and are of the opinion that people actually care what bag you use.

OhDoSitDownAndShutUp · 08/10/2023 16:48

It strikes me as more of a mum bag

Breakingpoint1961 · 08/10/2023 16:49

@echinaceadreams I think you should feel confident with whatever you wear/use if you like it..but I'm not sure I read the heading properly..so you don't want to be seen as serious?

FWIW I think the bag is really really pretty, and people can think what they like..

dynastyfan · 08/10/2023 16:49

It looks like a nappy bag to me

Lovethatforyouhun · 08/10/2023 16:50

Is this a wind up?
A quality leather bag or black plain nylon would look serious, if that’s the look you are after, this looks like something my gran would take to her knitting circle in 1992. Sorry.

goingtotown · 08/10/2023 16:51

Nice bag, ok for days out.

MariePaperRoses · 08/10/2023 16:51

It looks like a picnic bag. Nothing remotely office like about it.

Really?! I didn't think it was awful! I like it! I'm tempted to buy it as a casual day bag.

Take a look at

Bellroy - They have loads of bags that would be great in a professional sphere. The Via, Tokyo tote etc.

Aer - again, quite a few.

Peak Designs Everyday Tote - in black would be a good option.

PacSafe CitySafe CX - in black for commuting in cities etc.

SquitMcJit · 08/10/2023 17:33

This thread is depressing.

Makes sense that there may be some business rules and I understand the OP feeling they need to make a certain impression in their particular industry.

But people saying things like kids bag, Mum bag and generally deriding anything with a pattern? Bit narrow-minded. People like different things. I personally love seeing someone strolling along with a bag or scarf etc that is unusual or has some colour or is a lovely design.

OP - do buy it for non-work if you love it.

Antst · 08/10/2023 17:39

It does to me! The most successful people don't have to be boring!

I'd worry it would get filthy though. If you can't let it go, do find out whether it can be sprayed with something that'll protect it. I can't tell what the material is, but it looks like something that you might be able to treat with the kind of spray that's often designed for shoes and coats.

AppaTheSixLeggedFlyingBison · 08/10/2023 17:49

Where I work everyone wears sturdy laptop backpacks like Tragus or North Face or similar, including senior members of staff.

I do work in tech though so maybe that's why.

If you want a more fashion style backpack what about stackers backpacks?

Moistbushes · 08/10/2023 15:04

This is the sort of thing that says serious business woman to me

https://fredericstjames.com/products/womens-full-grain-leather-backpack-convertible-bag-clarissa?variant=42966340993252

I work in professional services and the junior staff would use something like your first post but most senior women use classic leather bags / backpacks in muted colours.

I'm in my early 60s and a partner in a large regional law firm. I last owned something that plain (dull?) when I was in my late 20s.

I don't understand why the OP's bag needs to say "serious business woman"

OP if you like it, buy it. I don't like rucksacks so I wouldn't buy it.

NatashaDancing · 08/10/2023 18:02

BareBelliedSneetch · 08/10/2023 14:47

It says “woman who likes nice bags” to be. It says nothing about how serious or otherwise she is about business.

It doesn’t scream frivolous or childish or wacky. It doesn’t say she’s anything that would suggest she’s not serious about her work at all.

Agreed. There are some depressing replies on this thread. If the OP was a junior assistant working for me I would compliment it and ask where she got it.

I would judge her work on her work.

LovelyMMOG · 08/10/2023 18:06

I work in a formal environment and people have all sorts of bags, often a smarter work bag and then another one for their gym kit or whatever and this one would be fine for that. I’d want a more structured bag for laptop and papers etc. Cambridge Satchel co have some nice ones that aren’t boring.

kitsuneghost · 08/10/2023 18:14

No it says teacher

Happycow · 08/10/2023 18:15

It doesnt say serious business woman, no. How about looking at radley (although the brand might be seen as a bit fuddy duddy, they are generally good quality for the price), osprey (the leather bags, not hiking rucksaks), or paul costelloe who have really good sales and the work bags i have got from them last years.

PurpleRadish · 08/10/2023 18:16

I agree @SquitMcJit . This ithread is making me sad!

LookItsMeAgain · 08/10/2023 18:18

It looks and says practical but it doesn’t give serious business woman vibes to me.

ActDottie · 08/10/2023 18:20

I’d wear it to work, doesn’t say serious business woman to me but who cares do you need to give off that vibe???

I work in a professional role (finance role at a bank) and no one would judge anyone if they came in with this bag.

ChamaChamaChamaChameleon · 08/10/2023 15:03

ooh I love Fable, got this one:
https://eu.fableengland.com/products/poetic-pink-quilted-backpack
(was £30 on sale).

Not sturdy enough for a commute bag - although I suppose it could be if you've got one of those light thinkpad type laptops. Mine is a heavy duty software engineer one.

I'd look for something with a proper reinforced laptop section.

Edited

That's very Legally Blonde 😊

How many of these conversations are you having on the commute? Do you think the people who might otherwise listen to you will look at your smart business wear, your presentable hair and makeup and the intelligent words coming out of your mouth but dismiss you because when you came in the office at 8 am your bag had flowers on it?

I'd be wary of how much white there is and it getting filthy

I'm not a junior assistant that's the thing. I'm trying to be taken seriously by sexist and ageist ars*holes so I want a bland boring corporate look
