I'm getting my first ever highlights tomorrow and I'm **ing myself because I've never done it!
My hair is thin, fairly short with some grey streaks which IMO look OK (sometimes people think they're highlights!!) Is there anything I should or shouldn't do...I've got no idea!!! Please help.

normally when i go they will give you a colour consultation and ask what colours you would like or what look i.e do you want them in blooks, or natural or more then one shade. They show you a board with the colours they have. I always ask the hairdresser what she recommends they always know what suits people best and their hair type. You could always just have a few put in and see how you like it thats what i did at first.

Hi, I have dark brown hair (now with a fair bit of grey, ahem!) which I used to have highlighted. I never had blonde highlights as it would have looked too 'obvious', plus problems with roots. Mine were more of a golden brown. I did really like them and I'll go again soon - was v broke for a while so stopped going! Your hairdresser should be able to suggest something suitable.

Are you having them done in a salon ?

If so then they will show you a colour chart and will advise if what you like is suitable.

I would stay away from reds as they tend to fade quickly.

You could have varying degrees of brown it all depends on how bold you want to go.

great advice thanks!

Will be off in an hour or so. Was thinking blondish at one ponit as I saw a photo of a girl that looked cool, but she was about 16 so maybe I'll stay away from those!!!! Someone else said golden..so that seems the most sensible.

I just see so many terrible highlights that it puts me off!

You could also go with really dark - My hair is fairly dark (chestnut) and I've had nearly black streaks done before which is quite subtle but cool.

My hairdresser always maintains it should take a year to take someone to blonde as you need to lighten gradually but after years of dying my hair I now wouldn't stray more than 3 shades from my natural colour - lighter or darker.

they will probably use foils to paint in streaks that will complement your natural colour and / or put a tint all over.

You'll look fab!
