A question about LED masks....

Hi,

So I was just about to purchase the Currentbody LED eye mask, but did a bit of research regarding the safety of LED light exposure on the eyes and apparently there is significant evidence that it causes eye damage 😬 so obviously that put a pause on the buy button!

Apparently they come with goggles, but say you don't need to wear them, probably because that would be quite counterproductive, as you'll be covering much of the area you want to target.

I really want to try something, as my eyes are looking so tired and I've given up on creams, serums etc. Not willing to put my eye health at real risk though!

This may sound silly, but does closing your eyes give you no protection? Are there any really small goggles that basically cover your eye balls, but not your contours? Couldn't find any when I looked.

TIA

I guess it really was a silly question 🤷‍♀️

Could you ask an optician or ophthamologist? Just at Boots or Vision Express etc. They might be reluctant to say it's safe and err on the side of caution but they might know.

Closing your eyes won't offer protection from much generally. What are the LED masks meant to do? Penetrate the dermis with lightwaves or something? Because then closing your eyes surely can't do much at all. If whomever (if anyone) certifies these products as safe, or if their legal advice has been to put goggles in with the product, then I suspect the goggles ought to be used.

Can you link to the research please? I have just bought a Currentbody led eye mask and was reassured by their safety assurances. I am worried now that it is not safe.

I have the facemask which I use fairly regularly. I just lie down and close my eyes when I have it on, haven't really had a problem. I wouldn't walk around with it on, the light would be too distracting.

I think it has given my skin a little boost, but to be honest the result is not dramatic, and I also use good prescription skincare so it may be because of that so don't expect miracles OP.

Here is the company's webpage that explains why it will not damage eyes.

What I read was it was specifically the blue light, and the woman had been carrying on with her day with her eyes open (and that it was rare, but then I suppose not many have the masks)

I don’t know the answer to this, but have been using an LED mask recently (the Light Salon one, pretty sure it’s red light). I use the eye inserts (not goggles exactly) and close my eyes, and the company says it is safe for eyes anyway. But the skin on my eyelids has gone all sore and I have stopped using it. I don’t 100% know if it the mask as I think it could also be skincare, but mask is the more obvious change. Will be gutted if this is true!

Thanks for the replies so far.

@bashful23 It's sounding like it's specifically blue light or devices that aren't FDA approved that may be the problem.

Ah, I didn't realise you'd posted that link @bashful23 😂 Just telling you what you already know!

An LED mask damaged my eyes, I had the Dennis gross one and after using it even with goggles I started seeing flashing lights. I went to the hospital as I thought I might have a detached retina but I don’t. It was all the time for a while but has calmed down a lot, though I do still see flashing lights like a strobe effect when I’m tired and it’s a couple of years later. I had no problems with my eyes before. So be careful. I didn’t see any difference in my skin either.

I appreciate your bad experience and what you describe is extremely worrying. You describe your symptoms but not what the “damage” was. What did A&E say had happened? And I don't understand how there would be damage if you were wearing the goggles?

Yes it was confirmed to be from the led mask, I didn’t go to an and e but a specialist eye hospital. I’m not the only person to have this happen. I had heard of the risk before I got the mask but went ahead with it anyway, thinking I’d be okay. Obviously in my case it was a mistake. The goggles don’t block out all of the light. Just sharing my experience.
