Why are all my shoes cutting into me??

So, recently I've started having a problem that's come out of nowhere. All my shoes (other than trainers) are cutting into me and giving me horrible blisters. They can be old reliable shoes or new shoes, Primark or my special Russell & Bromley loafers. I'm spending an absolute fortune on Compeed plasters!!
I prefer the No sock look with my jeans and flats, but no socks are out of the question now. Even when wearing socks though I feel that rub, and come home with another blister. And yes my shoes are the right size.
This has been going on for months and I cant figure it out! It's also very annoying as I can't wear the shoes I want and can only wear trainers now, while I let the very large and sore blisters heal.

Wondering if anyone has experienced this or any suggestions? Im age 44 with a wide size 6.5 or 7 shoe, depending on the brand.

Are you sure they are the right size ? I’ve gone up a whole size since my 30’s.

Have your feet gotten drier (could be aging related)? I find if mine aren't well moisturised regularly (despite not being super dry) they're far more prone to blisters and aches.

I don’t wish to be rude but have you put on weight? When I did so I found I could no longer wear my favourite shoes.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 05/10/2023 09:34

Have you tried one of those blister sticks you rub on?

Middleagedmeangirls · 05/10/2023 11:26

You say your shoes are the right size, but clearly they aren't. They may have been once but they aren't at the moment.

@Rocknrollstar may be right - this could be weight related or it could just be that your feet have spread as you have aged. Decades of weight bearing can cause the arches to drop and so the feet spread and get wider.

if it's either of these reasons the effect can be reversed by either losing weight or doing exercises to strengthen the arches.

Thanks for the replies! My shoe size did go up after my last pregnancy (10 years ago) but definitely not since. Pretty sure it's not weight related - but my feet have been very dry, wonder if that could be an issue. I'll also check out those blister sticks.

Hoping a winter of thick socks and comfortable boots will help too.

No socks is grim.

Try no talc baby powder in your shoes if you really must wear them with no socks.

oedema? Any signs of swelling at the end of the day? It can be quite subtle.

I don’t think the OP asked for your views on whether no socks is grim or not.

This is the story of my life, but it has been even as a child. There were always only one style of shoe that fitted me ( usually the brown lace ups) and I still got blisters.

I often do now, particularly with new footwear, even things like trainers.

Strategies that help:
Get a roll of zinc oxide tape and put a strip of that on your heel before any blisters start.
Put a small sliver of soap between your heel and shoe ( only works with socks)
Sometimes a heel pad stuck into the shoe helps but this is variable.

I don't know why I get blisters so easily but I'm assuming it is something to do with the shape of my feet - I think I might have a very narrow heel compared to the rest of my foot. I always need a lace or bar or something on my shoe. I just walk straight out of court shoes, ballet flats etc

This is what I was thinking, and it might be worth ruling out any underlying cause if so

I'm taking notes, I also have narrow & bony feet that slip out of shoes!

Me too @EducatingArti - Clarks school shoes were torture (until I broke the back down) as I have bone spurs and narrow heels. Veja trainers (non-vegan) have been terrible as they make my feet boil and sweaty feet = blisters.

Helenahandkart · 05/10/2023 15:58

Water retention?
I took some medication in my 30s that gave me oedema and got terrible blisters. Had a blister on the sole of my foot that was 6cm across.
