Are Brazilian blow drys bad for your hair?

I’ve been considering getting it done. Is it the same as a keratin treatment?

No it ruined my hair, never again

Yourebeingtooloud · 04/10/2023 06:57

Yes it’s keratin. I’ve been having them for around 5 years now & it’s changed my life. My very thick & lots of it hair was quite unmanageable before but now it is so easy. So ime only bad for your bank balance as I wouldn’t be without one now!

I’ve started having hair botox, which is a deep conditioning treatment - it’s about half the price, although it only lasts half as long.

It has the same de-frizzing / curl relaxing effect on my frizzy, curly, fine hair with none of the dodgy chemicals.

I use the at-home keratin kits from Amazon.
They work really well for taming the frizziness of my thick dry hair.
They don't damage your hair. But don't repeat the treatment too frequently or you will get product build up and it will make your hair lank.
Word of warning, You need to use specialist salt-free shampoo and conditioner afterwards, most normal shampoos will dissolve the treatment.

Hair Botox?! Wow, please tell me more!
my hair is quite dry and frizzy… it has a wave to it. I was looking at these instagram videos where some ladies are having these treatments that look like it turns their hair into silk and I was wondering what it is!

Oh see I don’t feel confident enough to use an at home kit, I’d rather leave it to the professionals 😬

There isn't any formaldehyde in the kits I buy from Amazon and I think it's banned in the uk for beauty products.

ParadiseZity · 04/10/2023 17:26

The tech has moved on and there are many formaldehyde-free products available now. I've been doing it for a couple of years. Revolutionised my life!

doggybootcamp · 04/10/2023 18:03

I use the 90 minute formaldehyde free product from Amazon. I could do it myself at a push but my dd helps. Works absolute wonders! My hair is very thick, wavy and prone to frizz yet today I washed it, quick comb and didn't even blow dry it and it's straight and silky.
Only thing is it does strip colour a bit- I just top up with colour conditioner at home afterwards

WhereAreWeNow · 04/10/2023 18:03

That's good to know!

SecretVictoria · 04/10/2023 18:08

The first one I had was amazing. Second, not bad. I found after that the effects weren’t as noticeable or long-lasting.

I wasn’t told this… had my first treatment at end of Aug and I feel it’s not lasting so well..

Strawberryshortcake90 · 04/10/2023 20:12

My mum does, she has it every four months or so. It definitely hasn’t ruined her hair, in fact she uses less heat styling on it. However, she has thick hair and lots of it.

How to best look after?!

tbh I use a deep conditioning mask most of the time, and hair oil and it’s really sorted it out.

I’m starting to think this is better on those with very very thick hair.

I have very thick, very coarse and very curly hair that unless I spent hours and piled lots of products on was very tight curls that frizzed very easily.
I have the milkshake Brazilian blow dry now ( I have tried others) it is the best I have tried and it leaves my hair almost straight still with body.
In fact I was a test model for my hairdresser and the rep said mine was the curliest hair he had ever seen it tried on.
The keratin has improved the condition of my hair as it smooths the shaft.
The Milk shake version lasts about 100 washes as only wash my hair about once a week it lasts about 6 months for me by which time the new growth needs treating.

LucyBMummy · 04/10/2023 20:54

@doggybootcamp what is the name of the one you use?

I buy from the keratin research store on Amazon- it's the 90 minute formaldehyde free one that costs £28.
Although I have a lot of hair, it isn't ridiculously thick. It is more wavy than curly and I go through phases of embracing the waves then going smooth- smooth suits me much better but I leave a gap after it wears off.
I'd also say that if you have a curly haircut or lots of layers, bare in mind that it can look very different when your hair is much straighter regularly- my layers helped thin the waves out and look less helmet like but not so good when very straight

WarmBeerAndSandwiches · 04/10/2023 21:10

I use Kerastraight, it's the only thing that stops the frizz! Kerastraight isn't a Brazilian blow dry and doesn't have formaldehyde in it. You can wash your hair straight afterwards as well if you want, none of this waiting around for days with a manky mop. I have to get it done about every three months so it's not cheap but it makes such a difference. I can really tell when it's wearing off.
