What can I wear to my ds's friend's wedding?

It's years since I've been to a wedding, and I'm not exactly sure why I've been invited to this one! But invited I have been, and I intend to go! Naturally, I have left it to the last minute to buy anything and am now panicking! Please help :).

I'm 58, 5' 4", a 12-14, dark hair, olive skin. I usually wear black, white, denim or navy but none of these will work for a wedding. I think I'm leaning towards a trouser suit, but I get hot quickly these days so I'd also need a nice top under the suit jacket. And probably shoes too. Budget is fairly fluid - not as fluid as I'd like as Ive just moved house and have builders in!

Many many thanks for any help :)

This thread is bloody hilarious OP, sorry

Any minute someone is going to suggest something from Bombshell or Nancy Mac and I'm sure @QuaterMiss will come back with something superbly avant-garde

The brown sack is not my thing but that brocade trouser suit - omg. Fantastic.

UsingChangeofName · 03/10/2023 18:40

That's what it was conjuring up in my mind @AreolaGrande

The links are completely bonkers. Take the advice about getting yourself into a city and looking at some department stores over any of those links.

Shame. S&B posters are usually so helpful.

NatashaDancing · 03/10/2023 18:40

The thing is the OP herself said this about "the sack"

I think I'd have to be a foot talker and a couple of decades younger to pull off your second suggestion! It's beautiful though so thanks for linking.

So either OP is extremely polite or genuinely liked it.

I don't like the brown version but liked it in another colour and liked other styles and it's a new designer to me.

I discovered Palava, Klements, Egg, Community Clothing and Sister Jane on MN. All great, non high street, non mainstream brands and other than Egg, none of them are silly money prices.

I think the previous poster with the suggestion of the brown sack dress was just having a laugh 😂

RachelGreensHair · 03/10/2023 22:50

The same two or three posters highjack EVERY S&B thread with their overpriced out there clothes. Take the hint that posters are interested in your sacks, regardless of how nice you think the back is.

What's your suggestion then?

Other than QuaterMiss's suggestions (which btw the OP liked) and one by Waltzing Parrot, which the OP hasn't commented on, there's been no other specific suggestions.

OP was told to look in a department store, Next and couple of other High Street shops. I doubt OP was unaware of the existence of department stores and Next so perhaps that's not what she was looking for.

RachelGreensHair · 04/10/2023 08:17

I don't give suggestions cos I don't claim to be a style guru but I've always liked following S&B for tips. But recently it's the same three posters, including yourself, on every thread ignoring the OP budget and requirements and sharing clothes that just aren't suitable and then trying to pick arguments. Pretty sure OP was being polite about your suggestions, which is why she hasn't returned. I'll give you that gold green suit would look amazing on Harry Styles, though I doubt he's on mumsnet.
And you're so patronising, I am sure OP is aware of Next. But that doesn't mean she wants to wear overpriced tat.

NatashaDancing · 04/10/2023 08:24

So you've nothing to add yourself beyond criticising those who have?

Khanga27 · 04/10/2023 09:24

Why not try Roman- they are great and affordable for events like this. I've bought a couple of outfits for weddings there myself. They have all sorts of different styles, so I'm sure you would find something you liked

WTF is that brown sack about?

I agree with @itsgoingtobeabumpyride. I wore a pink suit to a wedding last month from Oasis with a black cami underneath it.

Zara has good suits in various colours

Well said @RachelGreensHair

shiningcuckoo · 05/10/2023 01:25

I'm off to a wedding in November I'm wearing a navy maxi dress with big sleeves in a heavy silky fabric and a vintage kimono made from fine wool in burnt orange and green. Both bought second hand.
