Tell me about your teenage kids' skincare

DS is a young teen and getting a few tiny spots, will also probably need to start shaving soon. DD is a girl and approaching the teen years, also signs of a few spots every now and again. I am so out of touch - my teenage skincare knowledge came from Just 17 magazine, a bit of clearasil and that was that. Plus cleanse, tone and moisturise as instructed by my grandmother although I haven't been near a bottle of toner in decades! Can't imagine it did my skin much good at the time.

They both use Simple facewash. What else should they be doing, any tips? Eg should they be moisturising or anything? DS in particular has slightly dry skin and I sometimes give him a bit of aveeno for that. I guess dryness will get worse with shaving.

I find that Simple skincare is anything but. It’s one of the few things that gives me spots.

Both my teens use Cerave smoothing cleanser and Cerave moisturiser. I think they are about £12 each and often on 3 for 2. We just keep them on the bathroom sink and everyone uses them.

Steer clear of clearasil or anything similar. It’s usually for too harsh for teenage skin.

A gentle salicylic acid cleanser to exfoliate + combat spots and a good non-comedogenic moisturiser is really all they need. It took years before DD came round to moisturising (she was convinced it would cause spots) but in reality it made a big difference for the better. She has dry skin so cleansing without moisturising afterwards was just stripping her skin barrier and causing breakouts.

Cerave is good, as are La Roche Posay and Avène. Simple isn’t the best quality. Avène is our personal favourite as they are a non profit brand, their Cicalfate moisturiser is amazing and has worked wonders for her

13 yr old dd and 15yr old ds only use a flannel and water - if that! They most probably only wash the dirt they can see. They have a couple of tiny under the skin pimples and that’s it. I feel that if they used anything stronger, it would possibly cause them to break out more. Following as I’m curious…

Thanks! Interesting to hear views on Simple as it's a family staple and I'm sure I once read on here that it's a dupe for something pricey. But maybe that was something else 🤔

Absolutely agree. Simple is very harsh and always has been.

For breakouts/oily skin, Effaclar Duo by La Roche Posay is great. Or anything with around a 2% salicylic acid. Nip &Fab Teen Skin is another.

Agree about CeraVe. Can't be beaten.

My teens used Cerave.
Dd wore makeup which had SPF.
