How often do you wear the same outfit?

Starting to wonder if I over complicate getting dressed.... in my head you have a wardrobe of clothes and the challenge/fun is to wear different permutations all the time. I almost never wear exactly the same outfit twice.

But obviously another way is to put together a few outfits and just wear them on a loop which sounds much more straightforward.

How do you do it?

Off the top of my head I would say I have around 14 daytime outfits (for the season I’m in) that I wear each once per fortnight. I keep in mind what outfit I wore in different social settings and make sure I don’t wear the same outfit to the same location, or meeting a friend.

I have a really small wardrobe (I do have more in my loft but will likely get rid of them soon)!

I have a work capsule of a few shirts, jumpers and tshirts, two pairs of trousers and a skirt. They're all neutral colours so go together.

I then have three dresses, two jumpsuits and some jeans for weekends and holidays.

I repeat outfits a lot and don't think anyone notices tbh. Especially at work. I do think women have it harder. Dh wears the same thing every day (more or less), as do most men I know and nobody seems to care!

I have been wearing the same bottoms for a few days in a row lately. I don't wash my jeans or linen trousers after every wear, and I have a chair in my room that I air them on. I don't know if it's just because I've been feeling a bit meh lately, but I have just been taking said item off chair in the morning and wearing a different top. I always used to wear a complete different outfit every day, but not so much these days.

I did used to wash after every wear though, and it's really not necessary.

Well, 2 pairs of work trousers, 2 pairs of jeans, a pair of shorts and a summer skirt complete my bottom choices.
Probably half a dozen summer work choices. Similar number of winter choices.
Maybe 8 teeshirts/tops. Couple of jumpers for winter.
Probably fairly frequently repeat an outfit!

Is this really all you have? I take more than this on holiday. I would love to be more minimal though. Do you just not buy stuff regularly or do you do one in one out?

LadyWithLapdog · 01/10/2023 18:37

I tend to get a bit fixed on items. Eg last week I bought a new top from Zara. I’ve already worn it 3 times (washed it between wears). Then I’ll forget about it and I’ll wear the next thing a few times and think how could I have lived without it. Then get bored and start on a new one. I am in client facing role but different locations, so it’s ok to repeat my outfits.

Well, there is some sports wear, sme thermals and a battered old pair of jeans and teeshirt covered in various shades of paint. And a dress that hasn't seen the light of day since pre covid.

But, yes. That's it.

I hate shopping. And clothes hate me - nothing fits. So, it's a case of buying when I can't keep up with the rate it needs washing at!

I have less than 40 items of clothing including coats and jackets and owning too many items seems very oppressive to me. I still think I have too many and would like to cut down but when I did in the past, I struggled to cover office days, a week's holiday in the sun as well as visiting my mother for Xmas in a very cold country that she lives in. I once read on here about a poster who had 2 tshirts, 2 leggings some underwear and 1 pair of shoes

Cyclingmummy1 · 01/10/2023 19:43

I have half a dozen summer outfits and maybe 8/10 winter outfits for school. Some things I wear weekly, some fortnightly, some are definite outfits, some are mixy/matchy. But generally something needs to wear out before I replace it.

JaceLancs · 01/10/2023 19:45

I have a lot of clothes and could probably go 3 months without wearing the same things
In practice I have phases and favourites so probably repeat an outfit every couple of weeks
I don’t have that many skirts or trousers but they are all neutral so just change the look with what I wear on my top half

Middleagedmeangirls · 02/10/2023 10:14

I'm retired so the work thing isn't an issue. I've worn the same 3 dresses and 3 jumpsuits all summer pretty much on rotation. They are (to my eyes) beautiful, they are comfortable, they suit me and wearing them makes me happy. I'm not going to wear things I don't like as much just for the sake of change.

when winter comes I will switch to jeans and tops. Again I will wear the same pair of Jack Wills jeans every day because they fit me well and look nice. I have the same style in a dark denim and a paler one. I will wear those two pairs until they wear out or I find a style I prefer. If that happens I'll retire my current ones and switch to the new style.

I'm constantly decluttering my home and my wardrobe. If I don't like things enough to wear them on repeat they have to go.

GettingStuffed · 02/10/2023 10:25

Regularly, I have a number of pairs of black trousers and my favourite t-shirts. I do have an awful lot of clothes but I regularly find stuff I'd forgotten I had.

I really must sort it out but it's scary

Coffeedrinker7 · 02/10/2023 10:28

For work I tend to rotate the same few things. I realised I needed to mix it up a little when one of my students referred to my dress as “your Thursday dress” 🙈

piscofrisco · 02/10/2023 10:56

I probably have 8 outfits for each season that I wear on rotation or with slight tweaks (so I might swap a shirt or accessorise differently for example). Then some random things thrown in some days when I get bored

MakemineaGandT · 02/10/2023 10:57

Twice a year (for Spring/Summer, and again for Autumn/Winter) I spend a few hours having a big trying-on session and make lists (on my phone) of outfit combinations that work. Then I can get dressed quickly by looking at the list and ‘selecting’ an outfit choice. Because I have already gone through the hassle of working out which particular belt works with a particular pair of trousers, or shirt goes best under a particular jumper (for example) I can get dressed quickly without having to try on and discard items to get an outfit ‘right’. I then use my list to keep a note of which planned outfits I have worn, so I can make sure I’m rotating everything and giving all my clothes a fair ‘turn’!

I don’t wash everything after each wear - jeans and trousers for example get worn quite a lot of times between washes (unless I get them dirty in some way). Tops/shirts get at least 2-3 wears usually. I have a system for clothes which have been worn but aren’t ready to wash (I like to keep them separate from the ‘clean’ things) - I have a pile of jumpers and jeans which are currently in use, and I hang tops on hangers on the back of my door. So I tend to make up different outfits over a week or two with the same bunch of items (adding different accessories) before washing the lot and picking a new mini-capsule wardrobe to use for the next batch of outfits.

At the end of each season I make sure everything has been cleaned/mended before putting them away and switching to the other season’s stuff. Then when I get out the new season’s stuff it’s all ready to use.

Reading this back I sound ridiculously organised, but I have a busy life so this system saves me a lot of time in the long run. Plus I really love clothes and get a lot of pleasure out of planning my outfits!

Cantonet · 02/10/2023 11:05

Frequently.
I tend to have a 'uniform' for the week & mini seasons, unless the weather changes. I do change my top n underwear every day though. Jeans may be worn up to 4/5 days as long as they're not dirty.
My current one is jeans, cotton t shirt or shirt & a fringed tan cashmere long cardigan plus tan loafers. Last week it was wide leg khaki pants with a white top, same cashmere long cardi & stacked white trainers.

MaidOfSteel · 02/10/2023 15:55

I like to try mixing things up a bit. I do end up with some favourite combinations, of course, but I want to enjoy the clothes I have as much as possible.
