Coat help please - for someone who doesn't wear coats

And isn't remotely stylish.

I'm trying, sort of, to overhaul my wardrobe. Not easy on a very limted budget and 2 sizes bigger than I'm happy with.

I'd like to start looking more put together, and I think coat and bag help a lot with this.

I have a denim jacket, and a warm khaki parka type.

I don't want to buy anything "trendy" as I want to buy a coat and keep it for several years.

Thoughts on this?

Hoping it will cross over from work (with dresses/trousers) to casual (jeans, jumper, boots/trainers) and not look dated.

Admittedly I am also not stylish (at best I am "classic", but really I am a "basic bitch"), but this coat is my idea of put together!

Very simple silhouette and camel is a very classy colour.

All I'd say is be careful if you are hourglass shaped - I'm very broad in the shoulder (and hips) with a smaller (relatively) waist, and coats like this can be hit or miss. I've found a couple over the years I love, but often can look absolutely tent like in them! I think it's down to how structured the shoulders are and this one looks good - the shoulders go down on the model rather than sticking out horizontally if that makes sense.

Thank you! I'm going to look in store and try one on I think.

I think the one you posted is very nice - for colder weather this may do ( a bit longer and a bit more expensive but I suspect will survive a lot of wearing )

I suspect you wouldn't get several years out of it. What's your max budget?

SunnySomer · 30/09/2023 16:10

If you want it to last a few years, I’d be careful about quality. In your link the coat already looks really crumpled at the back. You may want to go for a slightly higher quality fabric.
This is £20 more https://www.zara.com/uk/en/soft-oversize-coat-p03046271.html?v1=293652507&v2=2290673
as is this https://www.marksandspencer.com/single-breasted-longline-tailored-coat/p/clp60606068?color=CARAMEL#intid=pid_pg1pip44g2r19c2|prodflag_As%20seen%20On%20Holly
I’d go and touch them in the shops, see how they feel and hang.

lindyloo57 · 30/09/2023 16:15

I wouldn't buy the john lewis coat as its polyester, it will bobble with the first wear.

Bemyclementine · 30/09/2023 18:04

I dont have a budget, I'm pretty skint! But thought I'd manage £50.

I dobt actually like any of the others as much. I'll have a look at it in store if they have it in. I'm really not a coat wearer so can't imagine it getting a lot of use, just at times where I feel under dressed without one currently

I had this exact coat two years ago - it's lovely, but it looked knackered after one winter of wear, bobbled and generally tired and old.

So much so, my mum bought me a replacement for my March birthday (almost identical, from Asda) as she was constantly picking bobbles off me whenever I went out with her! I wore that last winter and it still looks brand new. Pockets are massively deep too, which is an added bonus.

In short, great style, look at the Asda version!

I really like the new look coat, but if you fancy something a little lighter that is more suited to autumn/spring then this may an option. It’s a faux suede coat (the camel one is nicer than the other colours). I’m usually a large/xl in Zara but the medium fitted well. It is really smart looking, but also looks good with jeans. No fastening though. https://www.zara.com/uk/en/faux-suede-coat-p02712660.html

Ooh yes this looks much nicer.

It might be worth trying Vinted. I appreciate buying things on Vinted can be tricky. Lots of sellers don’t photograph their items well but if you can find a decent wool coat within your budget, it will last a lot longer than polyester. I got a lovely jacket a few weeks ago, retail for £200 new and I bought it for £40.

EllaPaella · 01/10/2023 13:15

I have the newlook one you posted @Bemyclementine but in black. It's actually a great coat and decent quality. I've had it for 3 years and it still looks good.
