Daughter frizzy hair

My 11 yo dd has thick curly hair, but it has a lot of frizz on the top. She is autistic and doesn't like messing around with it too much- she prefers to let it dry and then leave it. It gets frizzier as the days go on though and looks dry. I'm looking for magic really but are there any quick fixes? Or failing that some sort of routine with no heavy lifting? She won't let me mess about with her hair too much.

Bog standard John Frieda serum on damp hair , brush and should help

Not the best as contains a lot of silicones but I think it will be helpful in this case

Make sure you're properly conditioning, brushing through , rinsing it out fully .

I'd recommend a satin pillowcase and silk scrunchies where needed if she is ok with the feel .

The ideal situation might be the "curly girl method" but it's a faff

BramblyHedge · 29/09/2023 18:53

I have that exact hair and have not found a solution 😔

BramblyHedge · 29/09/2023 18:56

But I do avoid brushing it with a normal brush. I use my fingers or a comb with very long pins. And I use cowash coconut shampoo and serum or argan oil...which helps a bit.

Wassat · 29/09/2023 18:59

Argh! It's so difficult isn't it? She has a bib which stops it being too straggly but she really looks as if she's been near a static machine... oh to have beautiful glossy curls

Good anti-frizz shampoo and conditioner, and a leave-in spray or serum.
My hair is the absolute opposite so I can't recommend products - but possibly a line designed for black natural hair would help.?

jeaux90 · 29/09/2023 19:09

My DD14 has hair like this she prefers to keep it straight nowadays but when it's curly we use the supermilk from Lush. Spray it in and brush it through. Then a little of one of their styling creams like revive for smoothness.

God no! That’s awful advice.

  1. NEVER, NEVER, EVER brush curly hair. When it’s wet with conditioner on you can finger comb it or use a wide tooth comb, but never brush it!
  2. shampoo sparingly - conditioner is her friend!
  3. don’t use a towel - microfibre towels or a t shirt only and squeeze the water out, don’t rub it
  4. products - avoid serums, the amount you’d need for thick frizzy hair will just make it greasy. Boots curl cream (the pink jar) is amazing - just put a dollop of it through very wet hair. Or cantu products. Got2b twisted curl mousse is also very good.
  5. a detangling leave in conditioner is great for just topping up if there’s any frizz as it dries. The child’s farm one is excellent.

I have very frizzy hair - I’ve found silk pillowcases and scrunchies a big help.

Wassat · 29/09/2023 19:22

Thanks- does she need to wash it more do you think? I can get her to wash it (willingly)x1 per week but if I begged could probably get her to do it more...

I think once a week is fine, my curly hairdresser told me to spray my hair with water every day because she thinks my hair is thirsty. Would that be something your DD could consider? I use a very fine mist bottle (I hate water running down my face).

I agree with everything you've said@PosyPrettyToes but I do think it's OK to brush curly hair as long as it's soaking wet and gently.

I have very tight curly hair and find shampooing roots only once a week, then loads of conditioner and "squish to condish" in the shower, then evenly distribute gel on soaking wet hair, use a microfiber towel to gently squeeze water out and dry with diffuser gently gives long lasting curls and no frizz that lasts a week.

Key is to not disturb the hair much until its totally dry then "scrunch out the crunch" from gel once it is.

It might seem like a very long process but you don't have to do anything to it in between. Silk pillowcase and bonnet for sleeping in are a must for me too and stop tangles and frizz.

Highly recommended Only Curls products too. Also Google "Curly girl method" its a bit out of date now but really good tips on how to deal with curly hair gently - took me 38 years to figure mine out!

Zooeyzo · 29/09/2023 20:40

Once a week washing is fine. But always make sure you only brush when wet.

SofritoBurrito · 29/09/2023 21:05

My DD's hair looked similar. Things we've helped:
Don't brush it
When you think you've used enough conditioner you always need more.
Wash it once/twice a week
Try different products and find what shd like and suits her. My dd uses a mix of Only Curls, John Frieda and the garnier hair foods leave in conditioner.

AppropriateAdult · 29/09/2023 21:07

DD(9) is very curly and our washing routine is as follows:
Wash with conditioner only
Don't rinse it out
Comb through hair while still very wet
Apply a bit dollop of curl cream and comb that through
Scrunch with mousse
DD's hair is really dry so it can handle all the products and never ever looks greasy. She also ties it up for sleep and uses a silk pillowcase. It looks beautifully glossy after drying (naturally) on washday; it will start to look frizzy after a few days but it's definitely improved since we started doing the above.

I dont put shampoo in it every time I wash, about every 5 days. I use just conditioner every second times. Really helps, it's less squeaky when it's not shampooed too often. Also, a cut that doesn't require the hair to lie flat or curl to order is a life saver to me now. My hair is cut in a shape that is like a diamond, so even without doing much to it, bit of a shake, it's a style. I used to spend an hour blowdrying my hair straight twice a week. Well, I say "straight" but it never was.

SofritoBurrito · 29/09/2023 21:14

If you really have to comb it or make sure it's wet. If it's well conditioned the curls stay and it doesn't tangle as much

Wet brush is fine for curly hair it's wide pronged . No issues in this house

I'm starting to finally, properly care for my wavy/curly hair at the grand old age of 53.

Just before washing, I (gently) comb out any tangles with a wide toothed comb. I'm using this one atm, but any similar would do.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B082YGT9CL/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I then wash my hair, rinse, then apply conditioner. With the conditioner in, I comb my hair thoroughly with a shower comb, making sure any tangles are combed out.

I then rinse the conditioner out, again using the shower comb, then gently pat/squeeze any excess water out.

After this I apply a small amount of curl cream, that I have warmed by rubbing in my palms, and comb it through with the shower comb. I then cover my hair with a microfibre turban while I get dressed.

I then use a hairdryer, on high speed, lowest heat, with a diffuser, on sections of my hair, until it is partially dry. After that I warm some hair oil in my palms, then scrunch it into my hair.

After all that, once fully dry, my hair looks pretty darned good, if I say so myself!

Then, three to four days later, I start all over again...

Mercurial123 · 30/09/2023 04:22

A small blob of leave in conditioner mixed with some curl cream works for me.

Wassat · 30/09/2023 07:38

Thanks for the advice.. I'll head to boots today and have a look.

My DDs use this

www.boots.com/shea-moisture-/shea-moisture-hair-styling/shea-moisture-c-h-curl-smoothie-340g-10203978

It's the only thing that they both use on their hair that's the same. They use different conditioners as although their hair looks the same it isn't and it needs different products.

Neither of them use shampoo.

I wouldn't recommend John Freida at all.
