Shampoo to clean salt off hair

It seems I've got a build up of salt on my hair, it's got that tacky feeling that doesn't go away even after shampooing more than usual.

I checked for Boots and Superdrug's swimming shampoo but it seems they've both been discontinued.

Are there any inexpensive shampoos or treatments that might help? I know there's some very expensive swim shampoos but I'm looking for cheaper options if possible. Thanks.

is it sea salt?

I loved that Boots Sun Swim and Gym stuff, I miss it

I have been using Garnier Hair Food aloe vera recently which has left my hair really soft.

Ohthatsabitshit · 27/09/2023 12:45

Salt dissolves in water.

Yes, sea salt. I miss the Boots stuff too, can't think why they discontinued it!

I've already washed my hair twice and my hair still feels really tacky.

More likely to be a problem with excess product build-up, rather than salt residue. As @Ohthatsabitshit said, water dissolves salt.

Can you rinse in vinegar , not meant as a joke a genuine suggestion

madeinmanc · 27/09/2023 13:07

Hmm, maybe it is a build up of something else, then 🤔 I'm not sure what, though.

Yes, I could give vinegar a try. I will try anything at this point.

Salt and water can create a kind of film on your hair. The best tip I ever got was to rinse hair in fresh water before and after swimming.
TriSwim shampoo is pretty good, I think you can still buy it on Amazon.

I’m in my 60s. We grew up with shampoo that cleaned your hair. Don’t they all do that? I was at the beach most weekends and had thick, waist length hair that was never sticky or gross from the sea! It’ll be a build up of some or other product, it won’t be sea salt or sand!

If you've got a lot of product build up, you need a clarifying shampoo. Sometimes called a chelating shampoo, although these are usually stronger.

Joico K-Pak Clarifying shampoo is extremely good and you can only buy it online if through a Joico salon.

It's quite drying so best to only use it occasionally.

A scant tsp of baking powder and a few drops of water mixed into your usual shampoo. Makes the best cheap clarifying shampoo.

We're in a hard water area and I have this, nothing seems to shift it even the clarifying and purifying shampoos I tried. I also found them extremely drying and a couple even bleached my hair they were so harsh!

I did have one that worked for years then suddenly disappeared - I looked up the ingredient that worked in it and it turned out it had been banned as it was found to be carcinogenic - great.

I'm also in a very hard water area, it could be related, yes.

It's a good job I'm single because a man would struggle to run his fingers through my hair rn 😅 He'd end up trying to extract his fingers out of the sticky clumps 🤣
