Do I need a slip?

I have a needle cord shirt dress that I want to wear more often thus autumn but it sticks to my legs (with tights). Would a slip fix it? and if so what type/where from? I’ve never owned such a thing and I want to buy less and wear the things I already have.

Yes a slip would fix it. M&S have them. You probably only need a half slip. So one that you wear around your waist like a skirt.

Yes, cord tends to stick to tights. A half slip is the answer, if you can find one! They used to be common, but hard to find these days.

M&S is what I wear. They make clothes hang better.

M&S, John Lewis, Next, Debenhams, House of Fraser all stock, and always have stocked, full and half slips.

I sometimes think I live in a parallel universe. I can't imagine ever wearing an unlined skirt or dress without a half slip or doing the obsessive amounts of cleaning that seem to be standard on MN.

Have you seen those threads that appear from time to time? The "OMG I never knew...." ones? **

They can be quite funny. The next one should have "I didn't know that slips are a perfectly normal thing to wear under an unlined skirt. And make it hang better ! "

(** on one of them I found out Pontefract isn't in Wales)

M&S used to be good for this sort of thing

steppingout · 26/09/2023 08:41

Definitely and another vote for M&S!

I remember my mum always wore a half slip (or underskirt as she called them) in the 80s. She was only in her 20s. I think as lining skirts became more common they fell out of favour. Then I bought a vintage dress and could find a full slip for love nor money! Ended up borrowing one from an elderly colleague 😂

Thanks everyone! Does it matter what they are made of? Cotton or polyester seem to be the options. Actually the cotton dress sticks to tights so that would be no different I guess!

The M&S ("cool comfort") are polyamide and elastane. I don't find they cling.

Both polyester and silk can attract static, apparently it's down to humidity. One benefit of being clammy, I guess.

mdinbc · 27/09/2023 18:49

I just wish they would line all skirts. Ages ago, you had to have a shorter slip, longer one, and then if your skirt has a slit in it, then you have to worry about slips showing, so had to look for a slip with a slit...

OhBeAFineGuyKissMe · 27/09/2023 18:52

I might be odd but I hate a half slip. They create a pinch point and ruin the line, either full or nothing.

Again personal preference, nothing polyester or satin, the static and the cling defeat the purpose. I would go for cotton jersey or if I wanted an investment then a silk one.

NatashaDancing · 27/09/2023 19:14

The M&S slips don't cling. Not sure what they do to them but they work with all materials.

Cotton jersey or modal work with some, materials but not all. I have a lovely black cotton jersey full slip from Whistles but cotton jersey is a thicker and more insulating material than the M&S slips so it's for winter.

I always wear a full slip under an unlined dress and a half slip under an unlined skirt, although most of my skirts are lined. Not sure why it's seen as so odd. I can't think of a time in my adult life that I didn't.

As for the poster who said she couldn't find any- are you very remote with no internet access?
