Stuck in a rut!

I need help! I’m 40 next year and have a 6 month old. I’ve realised that I’m still dressing the same way I did in my teens… skinny jeans, T-shirt and trainers. And when I say T-shirt I mean the £2.50 T-shirts from primark.

I want to look more ‘something’ I’m just not sure what!! I want to look sophisticated but not frumpy. Not my age but kind of my age. Like a mum but a cool mum (cheesy). The thing is I don’t know where to look - can people recommend shops/websites that might be able to help me in at least thinking what direction I would like to go.

If it helps I’m 5ft 10 and a size 16/18.

You have a 6-month old so you probably just want to wear something you can shove in the wash. Sorry, I'm not much help.

What sort of clothes would you wear if, for example, your child was having a nap, and a tv crew knocked on your door?

At the moment I’d be in a nightie (lucky if clean!)

I think that’s why my aim is to have the ‘look’ by 40 as baby will be over a year then but yes certainly things that don’t need much of an iron.

I wish I could nail the 'at home' look but I seem to revert to a uniform.
You could look for smarter t-shirts or a t-shirt dress that doesn't look too tunic-y.
over leggings or thick tights.
Day dresses are good but tend to need ironing.

I need a style icon to inspire me. I like the 'What would Monty Don wear?' thread.

Not sure if they are any good, I only liked one or two items (e.g. Arket cardigan and stretchy jumpsuit). Joggers and hoodies are comfortable but they need to not look cheap or boxy and baggy.

I really like Mollie Campsie’s style - blogger/influencer I guess but not sure if too old/too much ironing involved

I think a lot of her looks could be quite simple to recreate but you'd be best trying to get some good basic staples and build up. For example maybe a nice wool jumper, a camel coat, and a v
Blazer? Then you could pair them with jeans etc.

I'd go on Vinted as you can get more for your money and there's some great bargains.

I also found I feel more put together in dresses as you don't need to worry so much about everything matching, just throw it on. I have to say I love M&S for dresses as they wash well and keep their shape.
