Shampoo (and volumiser) for greasy, fine, limp hair

Any suggestions for my terrible hair? I feel like I’ve tried all the suggestions on other threads and so am hoping that there’s some new revelation? My hair looks limp and greasy, within an hour or so of getting washed. It’s not build up. Underside is particularly bad. Dry shampoo definitely helps but it leaves residue on clothes and coats so would rather avoid if possible.

L'Occitane Strength & Volume shampoo. I've had various issues due to illness but this is brilliant. My hair hasn't looked this healthy in years.

Following with interest as I have the same problem with fine, limp hair that gets greasy quickly.

Aussie shampoo works well for my hair but it really dries out my scalp if I use it with every hair wash so I have to alternate with something else. I have found letting my hair air dry for a while before blow drying helps. If you have the cash then Kiels rice and wheat volumising shampoo is great.

I used to have oily fine hair when I was younger (it changed after menopause). The only thing that worked for me was loads of hair spray after blow drying it. The hair spray stripped the oil from my hair, and could go 2-3 days without washing it.

I have fine oily hair too, I manage it well with John Freida volumizing shampoo and conditioner (at the tips). I blow dry with a round brush, making sure to dry in sections so each section of root is completely dried.
I occasionally use a mousse in the root too, and I agree with the hairspray comment. Wearing it curled somehow makes it appear less greasy too.
You can also get dry shampoo that doesn't leave white residue - think I have one of the got2b ones.

I found this guy on YouTube, he's very knowledgeable:

u

Basically he says that that the shampoo has one job and that is to clean the hair properly so avoid anything that promises hydration or smooth hair. He recommends Volume Injection from Redken, also says that professional shampoo cleans better than cheaper shampoo which can leave residue and make the hear look greasy amd heavy.
Also the hair washing has to be done properly by thoroughly massaging the undiluted shampoo at the roots where the sebum is. The first wash should have minimal foam, a sign the scalp is dirty/ oily ans the second wash where the hair is cleaner should have foam. He says cheap shampoos have something in them to foam immediately and give impression they are cleaning.

Then step 2 is the conditioner or a mask but not applied on the top of the hair just the mids and ends.
Step 3 is applying a leave in spray conditioner (he likes one from purology but there are many options), to lock in the moisture in the hair before it has a chance to dry. Again on the mids and ends and avoiding the scalp.
Step 4 is a blowdry cream but not a heavy one, he recommends a redken one with volume in the name, it's a gel consistency.
Optionally, if the ends are really dry, hair oil can be applied only on the ends before starting to blow dry. He recommends the olaplex oil because it's not heavy.
In the days with no washing he recommends dry shampoo in the morning, massaged at the roots. Perfect hair day from living proof is invisible.
Also on no wash days, the hair has to be protected in the shower with a shower cap that has a fleece lining to keep moisture from it and getting frizzy.
Have a look at his videos be has a lot of interesting information there.
I'm currently trying to move from washing everyday to wash once every two days, it's hard but washing everyday is very bad for the hair....

Have you tried Christophe Robin cleansing volumising paste? It's weird stuff, a tiny bit with water is like rubbing soil into your hair, but it works for my limp fine hair. It's not cheap but I've had one pot for ages as it only needs a tiny bit. Then I just use conditioner on the ends.

caffelattetogo · 25/09/2023 14:27

Or, a cheaper alternative is the Got2B powder, but be very sparing it it feels horrible. I covered all but one or two holes in the shaker with a plaster so only a tiny bit comes out at a time. Used sparingly it lifts roofs well.

Caterpillargirl23 · 25/09/2023 14:36

I think you need a product after washing-mousse or gel will help a bit. Also I use The Inkey List volumising serum that helps.
Anything on your hair to slow the spread of the grease from your scalp to the hair.
I still wash every day.

Lumpyandlimpy · 25/09/2023 15:40

I have tried the Christophe Robin paste and found it made no difference, sadly. Also really didn’t like the got2B powder it made my hair so static. I agree that a post wash product may be helpful. Have tried couple of Aveda styling products, the tonic was useless but the mousse was okay. Also tried many others which I think actually adds to the flatness. I may just be destined for rubbish hair.

Mine sounds just like yours. I was recently given a Garnier shampoo bar. I was super sceptical but gave it a go one day as trying to limit my plastic use. OMG, it was amazing. I could go 2 days without washing, sometimes 3, which is unheard of for me. I'm a total convert and would highly recommend.

Tangelo · 25/09/2023 16:23

I wash my hair everyday - it’s fine, gets greasy quickly, and I do a lot of swimming so it’s easier not to resist the everyday wash tbh.

I’ve tried a lot of shampoo. Aveda was good but very £££ and I find the Avenno shampoo range better than anything else. I use the green one for volume on the daily, and then the apple cider vinegar one once or twice a week. Only condition after chlorine.

Not too spenny, hair looks decent, and honestly it’s only 20 mins or so a day. The joy of fine hair is that it’s dry very quickly!

Lumpyandlimpy · 25/09/2023 18:40

@Tangelo which aveda shampoo did you like? I’ve ordered the Pure Abundance Volumising one. Hoping it won’t end up sitting on the shelf along with a million other ones.

@ZuliKyanLarsFoz which Garnier bar did you use, please? There seems to be a few options.

SACHAJUAN has been great for my hair. And the Christoph Robin salt scrub, rather than the volumising paste.

Also using the Inkey salycilic acid on my scalp overnight helps with the grease

MissBoomBastic · 25/09/2023 19:58

This shampoo is really good for greasy hair

Lapsedcataholic · 25/09/2023 20:23

I have fine hair but lots of it, although lately I've been losing some so the hairdresser recommended Nioxin shampoo and conditioner. There are various "systems" and I'm using system 2, for mild hair loss. It's unusual in that the conditioner has to be used on the scalp as well as the ends.

I love it as it gives my silvery-white hair a lovely shine.

Then the only other product I use is a beeswax hair cream. I can't use anything with oil in it as even if I only apply oil to the very tips it creeps up to my scalp within a couple of hours.

Oh and I can't fiddle with my hair at all, any running my hands through my hair will result in an oil slick on the top of my head!

Tangelo · 25/09/2023 21:21

@Lumpyandlimpy
i like the rosemary and mint shampoo, but my favourite is the scalp benefits shampo. The Pure abundance range wasn’t great for me - but I think it’s so personal you shouldn’t read anything too much into it!
