Dry skin help

Hi all. I'm early 40s. I feel like, over the past month or so, the years are suddenly showing on my face 😒

My under eyes are very crepey, I seem more jowly, have had a few pimples for the first time in 25 years, and just look pale and tired. The main issue is, that my facial skin is incredibly dry. I've always had dry skin, but now it's suddenly much worse. I use a hyaluronic acid serum followed by clarins facial oil, but my skin is parched within minutes after applying.

I'm assuming this a perimenopause thing? Although I also have an underactive thyroid, which I know can cause dry skin.

Can anyone recommend some good skincare for dry, perimenopausal skin, or recommend some treatments or dietary things that might help.

I am late 30s and also have dry / tight skin, I also use tret which exacerbates it, and I now swear by cheap and cheerful cereve moisturiser.

Bio Oil dry skin gel. I apply to freshly-dried skin then leave it to absorb (mostly cos I'm doing other stuff like brushing my teeth) then moisturise.

OK thanks for the suggestions.

Revolution pro miracle cream , there whole miracle cream range is very good. I get them direct from revolution should get a discount for first purchase. They are nearly as good as Charlotte tilbury . Have really sorted out my dry skin, in fact have had people say how nice my skin is looking.

Try a moisturiser on top of the hyaluronic acid and then the facial oil. I found using a night cream really helped. Clinique 75 hour Intense is really good.

I don't get on with hyaluronic acid at all - even if I use it as directed/on damp skin/in conjunction with water bases products I still end up drier than I'd have ever been a few hours later.

Eucerin 5% Urea facial cream is my go to, and a hydrating Cleansing routine (oil based cleansers and creams), I also rate Byoma hydrating serum as a first step before cream, or mixed with it. Aveeno cream (not lotion) is also a good cheap option but it doesn't do the magic that the eucerin cream does. Laneige cream skin mist as a booster or before makeup and the laneige lip sleeping mask as a lip balm. Whatever moisturiser I apply I put immediately on when my skin is damp from washing and don't let the skin dry off first.

When choosing makeup I avoid anything heavy, use cream products and bb cream or tinted moisturiser instead of foundation or anything with a matte finish which makes a huge difference to the appearance.

Other than that I notice more dryness if I'm drinking less.
In winter when the heating is on I put a small humidifier on the bedside table at night to mitigate that drying feeling.

I have dry skin and I'm 51. If you have the budget I'd go with Medik 8. I use their CSA routine plus the R-Retonate plus their night moisturiser for dry skin.

Drinking 2 litres of water a day also helps.

Hi OP,

Supplement-wise I'd recommend this:

For body, I love this shower oil from Bioderma. For face, I've been using Q&A warming gel mask (I'm 39 and started noticing dryer, crepier skin earlier this year) - I'm really impressed by it. I've been using it mainly on my forehead and avoiding sensitive areas (e.g. for me, these are nose folds).

It might also be worth upping your water intake.

Forgot to mention Cerave hydrating cleanser in the last post

CeriB82 · 24/09/2023 20:58

Is the underactive thyroid being treated? If so it should not ne affecting your skin that much

i sweat by Espa facial oil and clinique.

BlackFlyChardonnay · 25/09/2023 07:10

Thanks for all the tips. I think layering a cream before oil could help. I'm going to Google all the suggestions to see what might suit my skin and budget best.

I'm on thyroxine but still quite a low dose, 50mcg. My gp won't increase it right now.

I'm early 40s with very dry, sensitive, aging and postpartum skin (all the things!)

Morning - Byoma Jelly wash, Ordinary Hyularonic acid, La Roche-Posay Hyalu B5 AquaGel SPF30 followed by Vichy Capital Soleil UV Age Daily SPF50+ Facial Sunscreen

Night - Byoma cleansing balm, Skinceuticals Replenshing Cleanser cream, Ordinary Hyularonic acid and then the blue Cerave cream for dry skin

Are you using your Hyaluronic on damp skin? In order for to work properly, it needs to be given moisture or it takes it from the skin, making your skin more dry. I’ve been using the new No 7 Future Renew eye serum. I’m on my 3rd tube and it’s actually made a difference. Vit C should even and brighten your skin and an oil cleanser at night should help.

My routine is

AM
Cerave Hydrating Cleanser
Curel Deep Moisture Spray
Hada Labo Super Lotion
Curel Deep Moisture Spray again!
Geek & Gorgeous Vitamin C
Byoma Gel Moisturiser

PM I use either Inkey List Oat Balm cleanser (more so in the winter) or The Ordinary Squalane cleanser, followed by The Ordinary NMF.

I’m 45 and my skin has never looked better.
