What's your opinion on botox?

fiddleswiddle · 24/09/2023 03:38

I've never had it mainly because I'm terrified of needles, however there are some women in my life who have it and look great and others who have overdone it and now have no expression at all left anymore.

My question is really if you would ever have it and for someone afraid of needles like me, are there any other alternatives?

What are 11s?
The frown lines on your forehead, between your eyebrows”

Old fashioned Frownies are your friend. Cheap, simple, work a treat. Takes a month or so of constant use but the results are permanent with continued use. I’m nearly 60 and mine pretty much disappeared in my early 40s (had late baby 😁) and haven’t returned, forehead looks great.

HermioneWeasley · 25/09/2023 10:19

re the male/female split, like @Overthinkingperhaps said, my Dr told me his clients are 50/50 now as well

PTSDBarbiegirl · 25/09/2023 10:27

It's great, I've had it once every 18 months, it's v subtle and I find long lasting. If I was more organised I'd go annually. ONLY have it done by a real medical practitioner. I've had Dr and a nurse practitioner do mine but I'd also get a dental nurse or dentist too, due to 7 years training on facial muscles. Do not go anywhere else but highly recommend it when done properly. I see alot of awfully done Botox and it just looks like a mask!

littlripper · 25/09/2023 10:27

I used tret for 15years then developed an allergy to it - which is common.

Alondra · 25/09/2023 11:15

I haven't used Botox yet but will do next month on my neck. I have no issues with Botox, if it's done professionally and without going overboard, the results are amazingly good. It's just another way to look good without invasive surgery. If you don't like it, the effects disappear in 6 months. No big deal.

YearsofYears · 25/09/2023 11:15

I understand the urge to get it and would never say never but currently at a nice stage where I'm embracing my imperfections.

gerties · 25/09/2023 11:22

I last had it done six months ago and still don't need a top up. I have a tiny amount (preventative) near where crows feet would be, it means that I've never developed them even when the Botox is wearing off.

I know if one or two people who go every 3-4 months and that seems excessive to me.

Warnings!

A couple of years ago one side of my face dropped slightly (almost like a mini stroke) and one eye looked larger than the other for a while. I had to wait for that to wear off, which took months, and I couldn't smile properly with my left side, and felt resistance closing the eye. There's always the worry that could happen again, even though I changed practitioner.

I've also had my eyebrows raised oddly, but that was altered at the review appointment. Another was heavy brow, where my upper eyelids felt pushed down also. This wore off quickly.

Obviously all that didn't put me off, but make sure to choose someone well qualified who doesn't rush and has an emphasis on good aftercare.

@Unexpectedlysinglemum
As far as I'm aware I don't.

I have many men and women who don't tell their partners though.

Overthinkingperhaps · 25/09/2023 13:44

@HermioneWeasley
I'm not quite at 50/50 still more women. However the last 2 years or so the increase in men is significant.
They're also coming in a lot more than ever for skin boosters, microneedling etc. Less so dermal fillers.

Overthinkingperhaps · 25/09/2023 13:46

@gerties 3-4 months is about average. Can't have it any sooner than 12 weeks though. My personal botox lasts me fully about 9 weeks then starts to taper off.
It's a combination of having it for so many years and the fact I have a super strong frontalis muscle. Hence why I needed botox in the first place haha.

Overthinkingperhaps · 25/09/2023 13:50

@Disturbia81 that's right.
My 11s for example when I first started having it you could honestly fit a coin in it (at rest!!) It made me look so angry.

Now it doesn't come back anywhere near as strong and I tend to use a lower dose there.

JamSandle · 25/09/2023 13:53

I see why people get it but I just can't be bothered. Always women having to chop and carve and inject themselves.

gerties · 25/09/2023 13:53

Yes, you're right that's average.

I mean that personally I wouldn't like to have Botox injections every three months, and so three or four times a year. I haven't explained very well, sorry, and I'm fortunate mine seems to last. I keep checking my forehead for movement range, as I'm beyond six months now, but I still don't need it.

Overthinkingperhaps · 25/09/2023 13:53

For those who are on the fence book a consultation. Make sure they're medically registered and insured.

Consultation is usually free. Some charge a small amount that you can use against the treatment.

Any practitioner worth their salt will tell you about the benefits/risks/ if you're a good candidate with no pressure. They may recommend something else. I had a younger girl come for a Consult Saturday and while she had more wrinkles than average for her age I didn't think botox was the way forward at this time and to save it for later and recommended another treatment.

Overthinkingperhaps · 25/09/2023 13:55

@gerties I wish mine did! Haha.

I have quite a few people who only come once or twice a year. My sisters lasts ages. So jealous!

gerties · 25/09/2023 13:55

That was to @Overthinkingperhaps 😀

That must work out quite expensive for you every 12 weeks!

Delatron · 25/09/2023 20:13

I love it at around the 2 month mark where it’s worn off a bit but still takes the edge off the wrinkles. I’ve had it on and off since 43. I’m 47 now. Very light touch with a good doctor. My frown lines are softer now even when it’s fully worn off. I’ve never had particularly bad forehead lines and haven’t developed any since starting so there’s a preventative side there.

I have a tiny bit around the eyes. That area is tricky - definitely not one to overdo or you look dead behind the eyes! Eyes wear off much quicker than the forehead. I get a good 4 months but have such a low dose that need to go after that.

Also do lots of running which makes it wear off quicker. I don’t really mind. Quite often I like to let it fully wear off, so not to lose perspective about what my face looks like without it.

Only downside is that when I try to frown I scrunch my upper eyelids so have a bit of a line developing under my eyebrow. Need to keep an eye on that.

I run a lot and it makes no difference to the longevity of my botox! I've heard that before though so it must make it wear off more quickly for some.

Yeah I guess it varies. I read that it speeds up how quickly you metabolise it for some reason. But for some it just lasts a lot longer than others regardless!
