Avoiding a faux pas - advice needed.

I am involved in a bit of amateur acting and as it will be in winter and possible very cold I need very warm clothing. I have long sleeve grey cashmere sweater dress with a high neck. It reaches to my ankles. The cashmere is not very thick, but I also have a black cashmere crew neck cardigan which is very warm. The cardigan reaches to the top of my hips. Would it be a faux pas to wear it on top of the cashmere sweater dress?

Depends what part you are acting, darling! Those stage lights can be frightfully warm.

DeeVee · 22/09/2023 21:55

Believe you me, from past experience with LED lighting (just as bright without the heat) in a past winter I saw a brass monkey looking for a welder!
As to the part played it is a housewife - middle aged with grown up kids.

Would your character wear it?

I'm not sure why in real life that would be a faux pas.

KirstenBlest · 22/09/2023 22:03

What sort of housewife? Lady who lunches or more Oxo mum from the 1980s?

NatashaDancing · 22/09/2023 22:12

Or a woman who shops at Raey?

Raey Cashmere

KirstenBlest · 22/09/2023 22:22

Are the clothes meant to look like that?

dontgobaconmyheart · 22/09/2023 22:48

What about this would be a faux pas? Most people don't really care what others are wearing and it sounds pretty inoffensive - just some basic winter layering.

Not sure what it being cashmere really has to do with it though.

NatashaDancing · 22/09/2023 22:58

Isn't it entirely dependent on the character?

There's nothing odd about the outfit but it's an outfit for a specific demographic - such as a woman who shops at brands like Raey.

Perhaps the description of cashmere is pushing the question into the wrong direction.
Each cast member (its village hall type group) begs or borrows items for an outfit. There is not a common store of clothes. My brief is that of an intelligent housewife who puts the family of her husband and two sons to shame with her problem solving.

I feel the cold and so such as a cotton dress (where adding a cardigan will not matter) is not helpful to me.
I happen to have a cashmere cardigan and any very warm dress would do, but a cashmere sweater dress is available to me.
It would not matter if it were lambswool or a synthetic knitted dress.
I do not want to look too frumpy and detract from the image I seek to portray.
Is a cashmere cardigan on top of a cashmere sweater dress too much?

In real life I am not too much bothered as to how I look - keeping warm ranks first!

I am baffled by this query. It is almost certainly fine. If you need warmth without bulk then Uniqlo HeatTech and M&S HeatGen thermals are excellent.

KirstenBlest · 23/09/2023 09:36

Either wear thermals under the dress or wear the cardigan over the dress. Just wear it with aplomb.

Twazique · 23/09/2023 10:48

I think your character would wear a thermal heated gilet!

TemporarilyshyAF · 23/09/2023 10:57

Hard to say without seeing the outfit as a long dark cashmere could be sleek and feline, modest dress, or shapeless depending on fit. Cardi on top similar depending on fit and lines. If you're unsure then what about thermals underneath instead plus tights? You could put the cardi on between scenes

TemporarilyshyAF · 23/09/2023 10:58

I do get practical but high quality layer vibes from your character though!

NatashaDancing · 23/09/2023 11:15

Who can tell ? I don't know what "frumpy" means. What you've suggested points me in the direction of the Raey cashmere which I don't think is in the least bit frumpy, it's stylish and is for a woman with means who knows her own mind but for others it's frumpy because it "doesn't show off your fab figure" (see other thread on that subject)

I can't work out what sort of image you're trying to portray.

Blackandwhitemakesgrey · 23/09/2023 13:04

Just wear thermals OP?

How can you expect anyone to answer without knowing the play, the era it’s set, the season its supposed to be, what you are doing in the play eg hosting a dinner party/cleaning/arranging flowers, walking your dog and also what other cast members are wearing?
