People who had their colours done - do they change

I had mine done about 10 years ago in my late 30s. Paintbox spring - suit bright warm colours with high contrast. My stand out best colour was chocolate brown by miles.

I'm now late 40s. Letting the grey come in but it's very slow. I look a bit washed out although my skin is in ok nick.

I seized on some chocolate brown jumpers today and they looked average. I was wearing black and it actually looked a bit better. Other historically 'good' colours have been average as well.

So does it change or is it just me being washed out in general? I genuinely did used to be able to see the difference (don't have a good eye for colour at all when left to my own devices).

Yes, it can change - but be prepared for some colour analysis enthusiasts to deny this vehemently. Your hair colour changes, your skintone can cool down, and bright eyes can become duller - maybe not in 10 years but over a lifetime.

Yes I used to be a winter, like Snow White black white and red when I was twenties and thirties. Now in my 50s it's much softer greys, navy, green, bergundy orange I had my colours redone about 3 years ago as my hair is naturally blonde now. Was dark brown when younger.

Some colour analysts would say your undertone never changes so your colours shouldn’t change.
Others factor in dulling of skin and hair colour change over time.
I think, on balance I’d buy whatever you feel good in.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/09/2023 16:48

Mine hasn’t. I’ve just gone grey according to my season and the same colours still look best with my skin tone.

iamthattree · 22/09/2023 17:27

Interesting thank you. I am pretty neutral - light brown hair, grey eyes, pale skin that doesn't tan much. Maybe it's a slow fade into less contrast?

I seem to be doing better than I previously did with the creams/light neutrals. Just a case of seeing what suits I guess.

Can you do a DIY colour analysis? I wanna know but can’t afford a consultant

WhereAreWeNow · 22/09/2023 17:35

Even if the undertones don't change, the level of contrast definitely does. I used to have much starker contrast (dark hair, pale skin, bright eyes) but I'm definitely more washed out these days. Hair fading, lip colour fading, less colour in cheeks, eyebrows not as strong.

greengreengrass25 · 22/09/2023 17:39

Yes I wondered this

I'm Spring but my hair is natural and quite grey so are you meant to change your palate?

Exasperatednow · 22/09/2023 17:41

Yes. I had dark brown hair and blue eyes. O used to wear much more chocolate brown etc

I went grey early and then embraced it. I wear more jewel colours. I also had to change my make up.

I didn't have my colours done though...

greengreengrass25 · 22/09/2023 17:42

Tbh I still tend to go for the Spring palate and I think it still suits me

Darklane · 22/09/2023 19:11

Yes, I think they do. When I had mine done I was a redhead, & came out as Blue Spring because I was so pale. Now my hair is completely white, not grey, & skin even paler. I find that the brighter & paler colours & all the peach type colours completely wash me out now. So I tend to stick with the darker blues, greys, turquoise ones that look much better. I wear much less colour these days.

tobee · 22/09/2023 20:39

Don't they do re-rating? Surely that must mean some people change? Or is it just a money spinner?

This.

Your skin tone often becomes softer with age and you might be better suited to the lighter colours in your palette, avoiding anything very dark, very bright and anything flashy/shiny. Lots of women lighten their hair as they get older, as it reflects light on their faces in a flattering way.

But I don’t see how your skin tone would turn from having a yellow undertone to a blue undertone or vice versa. I’m prepared to be proved wrong, though!

notsuchafrugalkitty · 22/09/2023 22:02

Your season won't change but your sun season might do it's worth thinking about booking a re-rate. I keep meaning to do it, as I've not been back in twenty odd years now.

greengreengrass25 · 22/09/2023 23:09

What's the sun season bit?

iamthattree · 23/09/2023 06:59

I definitely think I'm still a spring but yes to bold colours/dark versions being less good and the more neutral side of things suiting me better now. This is actually helpful as I never could really rock the CBeebies colour range in a professional setting, I didn't have the styling skill to carry it off.

I've found the same with lipstick. I yearn to be someone who can manage the grey/white hair and strong lip thing but actually a subtle sheer rose pink suits me 100% better these days. Maybe when I finally go fully grey I can try again....
