Are Cos clothes decent quality?

I need some new long sleeve tops for work and quite like the look of these from Cos. If it fit nicely and I'd probably buy a few colours. I've not bought from Cos before, does anyone have any insights on the general quality, sizing, durability etc?

I'm a bit worried it's ultra thin and won't be warm enough. it's hard to tell from the pics:

I wear a lot of Cos clothes but mainly their linen dresses and shirts. Also like their cotton shirts. I find their jersey stuff no better than H&M or Zara

Also H&M group, but these merino tops from Arket are really lovely quality. More expensive than the Cos ones, but I can tell you they are warm and wash well

These look pretty good actually, thanks

I like Cos. I saw these jumpers at the weekend. They are very very thin, I think that is the point of them. Not like an ordinary merino top at all. (Uniqlo's were good, if that's what you're after)

Thanks, this is really useful. I think they are too thin for what I’m after.

I like those thin merino tops from Cos. I think the quality is decent enough but I only buy in sale.

Blinky21 · 22/09/2023 22:13

I used to buy loads of jumpers from there but then have a tendency to shrink significantly, despite following the care instructions.

Blinky21 · 22/09/2023 22:14

Meant to add, I think Uniqlo is much better quality

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 22/09/2023 22:25

Uniqlo quality is horrible. Tiny seams, loads of viscose and crappy hems.

Rainallnight · 22/09/2023 22:27

It’s a totally different league from H&M. It’s just owned by the same company.

Everything I’ve ever bought from Cos has been very good quality and lasts forever.

olderbutwiser · 22/09/2023 22:35

I have some very favourite items from cos that I have had for years and are definitely better quality than average. Lots of their stuff is barking/only for skinny gazelles but it’s definitely a favourite browsing spot. Sadly my local one has just shut.

Littlepaleale · 23/09/2023 03:47

bought a cos dress this summer. Love the quality and cut. Agree with the post about in-store experience being much better than on-line. Fabrics felt better quality than Reiss, as a reference point. Enjoy exploring!

Mercurial123 · 23/09/2023 04:19

The merino tops in the OP are for layering that's why they are so thin. They bring them out every year. I have a couple and they last years if taken care of.

COS are definitely better quality than Uniqlo.

Well over half my wardrobe is from COS. Have been a customer since they first started, around 20 years or so now, (and still have pieces from their first collection). Have always found the quality to be good. I have several of the top you linked to in your OP, some of which are a decade old and still going strong. What I will say is that with COS' knitwear, wash it by hand or on a delicate/wool wash as some can shrink. Their viscose pieces benefit from being a clothes steamer rather than a good iron.

Styles and sizing are consistent, the former of which there are many that are repeatedly each season. Quality is still pretty much unmatched on the high street. Haven't seen the decline some posters have mentioned - not sure if this is because I have been lucky or because I am really careful about how I take care of clothing/laundering them. I ind the sizing can be generous, but more true to size than most brands.

I have a couple of those Cos jumpers from last year which I wear for work. They are very see through! good fit though. (I'm not entirely sure how to wear them without a jacket - I think unless you're happy with your bra showing, you'd have to wear a vest top underneath)

BangingOn · 23/09/2023 08:02

I’m a big fan of Cos and always find their clothes good quality. The styles might not always suit me but the things I do keep become the most worn items in my wardrobe. I have a couple of the tops you linked to and as @MonikerBing says they are quite sheer. They are very flattering, very warm and great for layering either over vests or under other tops, but I wouldn’t wear them to work with just a bra underwear. The Me+Em invisible layering camisoles work well under them though.

They pay the people who make their clothes really badly

They don’t seem too bad to me.

Boohoo and PLT are much worse. I would say the H and M group are one of the more responsible retailers.

I've only really started buying from Cos the last few years but from what I have the quality, design and cut is very good. H&M and Uniqlo are just not comparable.

bopbey · 23/09/2023 09:53

I love Cos, I love the cuts, the weight of the fabric & think a lot of their stuff is pretty classic.

HumourReplacementTherapy · 23/09/2023 10:57

Love cos. It's great quality compared to many places in the high street. I have a few merino tops (the ones with thumb holes) but they're base layers.

Katiepoes · 23/09/2023 11:04

I love the trousers from COS. I have lots if different styles and they are all great both quality and fit. I also have a wool coat bought in their sale five years ago that is still perfect. Also the heavyweight tees are good, mine are in heavy use.

I like Uniqlo for some things, mainly the U stuff but there is no comparison for quality, especially for trousers.

FastFood · 23/09/2023 14:13

I love Cos, it's generally good quality.
Re: merinos, I don't know these in particular (but I've been thinking about getting some) - but I have other merino tops, and don't be fooled by how thin they are, a thin high quality merino layer can be very warm.
Mine are from Icebreaker, they're crazy expensive, but they're for winter sport. I never had to use a jumper when skiing with them. Just the top, and my ski jacket. Also, a very good thing with merino is that it's breathable and don't stink easily. You're not supposed to wash them after each use.

clowniform · 23/09/2023 15:52

Agree COS is best in its price bracket, and for older fans I'd recommend revisiting. I've come back to it in the past year after a few years' disenchantment and there has been a marked improvement in quality.
The merino baselayers are as PP said see-through but still warm. It sounds like you've decided to pass but size wise they run slightly big and very long, a fairly typical Scandi brand fit.

highlandcoo · 23/09/2023 17:19

I really like COS. Usually shop in their Manchester store which is light and airy.
Some of their cuts are quite "architectural" and can drown me a bit, and I can look through the whole store and find only one thing I want to buy .. however, that item will last well, be worn loads and become one of my favourite items of clothing.
I agree that their clothes look more expensive than they are. My black tulip dress was (from memory) around £70 but looks as if it cost around £200. Really classic and ageless.

frenchgrey · 23/09/2023 17:35

FWIW, used to live in Paris it was popular with professional, stylish women I knew there, both French and international nationalities and it was considered a notch above high street - located among the designer stores in Brussels for instance, and I have always found it great quality, designs and a brilliant price point - but that may have been in euros, I haven't shopped in the UK.
