Makeup Brush Cleaning

How does everyone clean their brushes? I have one of those spinny things that is great for the brushes that fit in it but it’s a pain for the ones that don’t.

Any tips will be much appreciated!

I use Trish McEvoy Brush Cleaner.

TattiePants · 21/09/2023 21:38

I just squirt some cheap baby shampoo into my hand, rub the dry brushes until they’re coated in shampoo then add water. Rinse and repeat until the water runs clean then leave to dry naturally.

HappiDaze · 21/09/2023 21:40

I just use my hand wash and rinse till clear

Same here

I use one of these Silicon brush cleaners and shampoo.

BeretRaspberry · 23/09/2023 14:09

Thanks for all the tips. I actually bought one of those silicone brush cleaners after having a mooch on Amazon. I find it much quicker and less hassle and it does a better job than the Style Pro thing. I still used the Style Pro for drying them and that made the job a doddle overall.

Hand wash and this little silicone thing with grooves on that I rub my brush against.

Meadowflower2023 · 23/09/2023 15:13

Mine go in the washing machine in a zip bra bag thing. Only about every other month though. I feel gross now I've thought about it.

TheDogsMother · 23/09/2023 15:21

Fairy Liquid and warm water. Estée Lauder Double Wear Foundation has an oil base so needs to be cleaned with something that cuts through it. Fairy works fine on powder brushes too.

smallshinybutton · 26/09/2023 08:50

Those spinny things wreck brushes. Only use if you use cheap brushes.

ChishiyaBat · 26/09/2023 12:49

I put mine in a pillow case and stick it in the washing machine with some light cleanser and a drop of disinfectant, only a short wash 14mins, but they come out gleaming and almost dry from the spin, but I have a LOT of brushes so it would take me hours to do by hand.

AgingDisgracefullyHere · 26/09/2023 13:03

I swish mine in rubbing alcohol (bought cheap at the local ethnic hair and beauty store), then I squeeze them out with a microfiber towel and lay them to dry. Dries fast and disinfects.

DeedlessIndeed · 26/09/2023 13:09

How often does everyone wash theirs?

Especially foundation brushes which have moisture in them.

I never know if I'm being gross or over zealous with washing them.

Shadypaws23 · 26/09/2023 13:15

Warm water, baby shampoo or soap, silicone pad
Never get the glue wet and dry so the bristles point down so the water doesn't get in
Expensive brushes and I am precious about them!

Shadypaws23 · 26/09/2023 13:16

Oh and in between I buff out any colour on a micro fibre towel

tintinandhisdogsnowy · 26/09/2023 13:18

I wash mine once a week with baby any shampoo I don't like. I'm careful not to get the glue wet. I dry with bristles down.

Lightsandtights · 26/09/2023 13:37

Washing machine in a little laundry bag that I have. Come out like new.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 26/09/2023 13:39

A small amount of micellar water in a glass and leave the brushes to absorb and soak for a short while. Then rinse under cold water. Works a charm.

^ this.

Works a treat for me and some of my brushes are older than my kids who are in their twenties!

I know this is an older thread which has been resurrected, but who knew you could put them in the washing machine?!

greengreyblue · 21/05/2024 19:29

I just use shampoo!

I assume they're put in a laundry bag but I still feel like this would wreck them eventually. The glue holding the hairs in at the base would dissolve?

I spray my brushes with isopropyl alcohol, rub them into a cloth until they're clean. Takes seconds and they dry almost as quickly.

Sparrowball · 21/05/2024 22:02

I wet the bristles, put a marigold glove on my left hand, squirt hand soap onto it and wash the brushes against the textured part of the palm of the glove. Rinse and repeat until the water runs clean. I leave the soap for a few minutes on the bristles of foundation brushes.

I wouldn't put them in the washing machine because the ferrule shouldn't get wet as it damages the glue and the brushes will shed.

I squeeze the excess water with a microfiber cloth and dry flat.

I know I wouldnt, Id be feared that the glue would weaken

My brushes arent expensive nor matching, a collection of brushes that over the years I always reach for

I clean them after every use. I use a powder foundation so dont want oils or moisturiser/primer transferring to it, so I give them a good rub out on a face cleansing wipe till it comes clean then leave to air dry

Every few weeks I give then a good clean with either bar soap or shampoo
