Help! Slippers....

I know...slippers! 🙄

So, this is my problem (so trivial really, but). We had some building work done a couple of years ago which meant new kitchen flooring and new carpets in living room. Our old kitchen flooring was ceramic tiles, new floor is Karndean. Old carpet was wool, new carpet is some manmade fibre.

Since having the floors done, I cannot wear anything on my feet (socks, slippers, shoes) without incurring the most ridiculously loud (and painful) static shocks from everything I then touch whilst wearing them. I'm sparky stuff at the best of times, my car door likes to zap me every time I get out the car as well. It's not so bad in the warmer months, but already I'm sitting here with my feet freezing cold. Last winter I wore my snuggly slippers, but I'm up and down like a yo-yo and taking them off every time I wanted to walk quckly became tiresome!

The biggest issue I have is that I am a lifelong T1 diabetic, and do have some background neuropathy in my feet as a result. My diabetic practitioner would have an attack of the vapours if she knew I was wandering around barefoot and earlier this year, the inevitable happened. I obviously trod on something, as I had a lump of metal embedded in my toe, but as it was a toe with reduced sensation, I didn't know about it until it turned violent. 9 weeks of 3 x weekly dressing changes, compression socks, antibiotics and goodness what else and it eventually healed, but suffice to say it's made me a bit twitchy about going commando a la trotters.

Question is, does anyone have any suggestions or ideas that I could try - either to eliminate these unpleasant static shocks, so that I can once again wear my beloved sheepskin slippers, or for a slipper that has a sole that won't try and electrocute me with every step! I've tried most different types of sole that I can think of, but to no avail.

Thank you for any ideas.

Would a rubber sole help? I love my Fitflop Chrissy slippers. The sheepskin ones might be good for your diabetes. You can usually get them cheaper on Amazon or the Fitflop outlet.

I got some Birkenstock slippers last winter. First proper slippers ever. They are great. Supportive, and rubber soles.

What about some slippers from Emu Australia (like Uggs but actually an Australia company rather than an American company pretending to be Australian and making everything in China).

They're warm and have rubber soles (so suitable outdoors as well as inside). Great quality. I swear by them.

Thanks all. Unfortunately, rubber soles are the worst culprits. I've got a lovely pair of Whistles sheepskin slippers, but the rubber sole and the house are conspiring to kill me!!

Could you look at things like Birkenstocks where there is a number of layers, so rubber, then cork and you could add a sheepskin insole. The different conductivity of the layers might work.

Otherwise, I'd get rugs to break up the floor space, as static has to build up, so moving between the carpet and rugs would stop the build up.

@MyEyesMyThighs

Thank you, I'll definitely look into multi layer soles.

What happens if you pin a safety pin to you slipper, does this help discharge the static? It works for skirts

@HundredMilesAnHour curse you! You've just cost me £80 in the Emu sale on the gorgeous Denman mini boots - half price in the sale though so maybe you've saved me money as I was contemplating buying some Uggs but these are much nicer Smile

I've never heard of this, so thank you. Off to find a bucket of safety pins now!

Sorry not sorry @Athena51 😂Sounds like you got a bargain. And Emu are much better quality than Uggs. Good choice!

Can you carry a fork around to discharge the static?
