How long do your shoes and boots last?

I think I must walk along dragging my feet because every single pair of shoes I buy is wrecked within about 4-5 months. My lovely brown leather winter boots (which I could still wear for a wee while) are all scuffed at the toes. There is no point in buying expensive shoes because I'd scuff them too...
Is it just me?

Buy Dr Martens - they are impossible to wear out!

I have five pairs of various colours and styles and the oldest are 14 years old!

(they're not to everyone's taste though!)

SheherazadetheGoat · 04/03/2008 19:54

you could polish them?

SheherazadetheGoat · 04/03/2008 19:56

or wear galoshes

hairtwiddler · 04/03/2008 19:57

I could polish more often, that's true. Would that stop me scuffing toes though. Should I get some steel-capped sensible smart shoes for work?

AGES!

I don't buy cheap shoes and I treat themm all very well - also get heel caps on them so they don't wear out so quickly.

I've had one pair of boots since 1989. A pair of Frye boots from about 1994.

Quattrocento · 04/03/2008 19:59

Polish?

hairtwiddler · 04/03/2008 19:59

at expat and her high stepping style!

oh, i treat them very, very well.

if they get wet, i dry them away from heat - it can damage the leather.

i spray them with protective spray once a year.

polish, clean, take them to a cobbler when necessary.

hairtwiddler · 04/03/2008 20:01

I think I may be a shoe slattern....

if they get mud on them, i dry them on newspaper and then brush the mud off with a cloth.

oh, yeah, i'm a bit obsessive.

but i don't go for cheap shoes, either, because they don't fit my feet well.

am a bit skint just now, but my mother bought me a lovely pair of heeled black boots in Clarks for about £75 when she was here as a gift.

those are going to last a llllooonggg time.

Gingerbear · 04/03/2008 20:03

Years.
unless they are sandals - usually last a summer, as barefeet make them stinky by the end of the summer!

hairtwiddler · 04/03/2008 20:06

Do repair places mend scuffed toes? The boots are fine otherwise. I do love them. I promise to be better from now on, since you have all shamed me and my shoe scuffing ways.

Mine also last years, i have a favourite pair of boots that are about 8 years old, I just get them re-heeled when needed.
But then I do own a LOT of shoes and can go weeks without wearing the same pair twice!

TheMadHouse · 04/03/2008 20:13

Oh I have shoes and boots from years ago. I even have the ones I bought for my wedding reception 13 years ago.

I am ultra obsessive regarding shoe and boots and look after them.

Heeled and soled when nexcessary - great local cobbler
Polished
If wet dried with newspaper inside
Never wear the same pair two days in a row (as the leather will strech)
Expensive when possible (bought in the sales)
Stored correctly (boot pole things for boots), in bags if possible.

The only thing is that my feet are bigger now after my two DS's

SheherazadetheGoat · 04/03/2008 21:09

actually i win! i have some vintage utility shoes from the 1940's which i have had for about 15 years and they still look good. i don't wear them very often.
