Talk to me about retinol

Hi I'm wondering about retinol or vit C or something. Until now the most I've dabbled in is a bit of salicylic acid In moisturiser or face wash. Have seen ads for Olay with vit C or cerave retinol serum. anyone got any advice for me?

More info ... I like my cosmetics but have been a facewash in the shower type person with light moisturiser if feels dry. My skin doesn't really like to be messed with. Generally this has worked well but feel my time of getting away with this is coming to an end.

Most days I am make up free, unless if I'm out to lunch or in the evening. Have no time on work days (health sector) & have just started HRT.

I'm fair skinned, tan slowly, sensitive but generally blemish free combination skin, except Sebaceous filaments on my nose can never get rid off. Still quite fine lines. I try to wear fact 50 when it's sunny but still got some darker patches from hols on my cheeks. (When Suncream sweated off) brands I tend to use are Olay Neutrogena Clinique Cerave Eucerin Boots no 7.

Totally clueless about retinol does it just resurface?

Retinol can make your skin sting or peel

I'd start off with the Boots No 7 0.3% and if your skin tolerates it move up to the 1%

If you skin is sensitive to it stop using it

Then once your skin has settled apply a moisturiser before hand and use once a week and work up to every 3 days

Not what you asked at all but I had nightmare sebaceous filaments on my nose. I used the original Nip Fab glycolic pads on them 2/3 times a week for a couple of months, they completely disappeared and have never come back!

Oh really? I have had mine since a teenager! Surely they must be structural now! I might try those pads

Paula's Choice 2% BHA liquid exfoliant is great stuff and should work well on your sebaceous filaments

I've recently started using the La Roche Posay retinol. I've had a definite improvement in my skin.

It's not a dramatic change more subtle. Improved my hormonal breakouts and less blemishes. Small reduction in fine lines and uneven skin.

I had no reaction to it but did seem to breakout even worse after the first few weeks which eventually settled.
