Is anti-aeging skin care a lie?

KissKiss29 · 19/09/2023 20:29

I'm 29 and I have never cared about my skin... up until now. I have a few dark circles and I don't know what to do about them!

I've thought about starting some kind of skin care but I am hopeless. I'm not the type of person to think long-term so I think I need some convincing.

I want to know if anti-age products worked for you? I know you will never truly know, but just going off of a feeling, what do you think? :/

My mum has amazing skin and has never really used any products. I normally have great skin, but postpartum it's gotten a bit wrecked with the hormone changes and tiredness.

whatamess100 · 19/09/2023 20:40

I've tried everything from Elemis and murad to the ordinary and superdrugs own, and I've had to say best results I've had were the lower end price rang, loreal revitalift is really nice and often on offer.

TheLongGloriesOfTheWinterMoon · 19/09/2023 20:46

A lot of it is, absolutely.

Proven anti-ageing ingredients (not products) are Vitamin A and Vitamin C. The latter works in conjunction with sunscreen as an anti-oxident so not anti-ageing as such, more a protection booster. Will make skin glow as well.

Vitamin A (retinol, retinal, retinoic acid) absolutely yes. But it needs to be at a percentage that is high enough not to be just paying lip service and so the manufacturer can call it a "retinol cream". It won't take years off but it will make your skin look great for your age.

Skin needs to be clean, protected, and hydrated.

Influencers will recommend 27 serums and wax lyrical about a different brand every other day conning you into thinking they use them religiously. Dermatologists will tell you to use CeraVe, a vitamin C in the morning, SPF 50 and a vitamin A at night.

I really like The Ordinary. You can send them a picture of your face and concerns, and they make up a regime for you. Really good prices.

Howtosolveit · 19/09/2023 22:11

SPF and Vitamin A. That's all!

Crikeyalmighty · 19/09/2023 22:19

My skin actually looks better with omega 3 supplements, drink tons of water, simple or Olay and the odd spritz of water spray

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 19/09/2023 22:23

I think some of it is genetic. But a basic skincare regime helps. I never used to bother doing anything, but recently my skin was looking very dull and tired. I've started using
Vitamin C micellar water (garnier)
Vitamin C toner (from boots)
Random moisturiser (from Avon)
My skin looks brighter, feels better and I've had a few comments about it already.

HappiDaze · 19/09/2023 22:27

Don't smoke

Drink lots of water

If you're knackered at least Wipe your makeup off at night with Micellar water, use a serum use a basic moisturiser

If you're not wearing makeup still clean your face with micellar water, serum, moisturiser

Once you can be bothered use a decent face wash in the morning and at night.

Start using retinol when you start to see any sign of wrinkles. Not really any point using it before that

Use SPF or wear foundation with SPF to keep your skin from aging any quicker than it needs to. Might as well use foundation and you'll look fresher anyway.

HappiDaze · 19/09/2023 22:28

Just use Boots No 7 products

They're great, they work and are easy to navigate, get hold of and not to expensive

HappiDaze · 19/09/2023 22:33

And no anti aging is not a lie you just need to know what products to use.

Don't use cheap dupes because they will not work because the ingredients are not strong enough to work properly

Equally you not need to spend a fortune either

Do your homework

Buy Caroline Hirons book Skin Care

She changed the way we all treat our skin and knows what she's talking about. Do not fall into buying all the expensive products she now promotes though now she's made a name for herself. read her online blog thing from 2015 ish

JanglyBeads · 19/09/2023 22:40

(I beg to differ, Caroline Whatsername hasn't changed the way I treat my skin!)

I have always had compliments only (now well over 50 yo) skin.

I only use water and Johnson's baby lotion, don't smoke or drink, rarely use make up.

Job done.

JanglyBeads · 19/09/2023 22:40

*compliments on my

SunRainStorm · 19/09/2023 22:41

Just noting that retinol etc isn't safe for breastfeeding.

Vitamin C is fine though.

CandyLeBonBon · 19/09/2023 22:45

Your diet is likely to have a far greater effect on your skin texture and structure than topical creams. Work on your omega 3, vitamin a & c, b12 intake as much as you can and reduce processed food as much as you can.

Topical applications can do brilliant things but you have to eat well, sleep well and nourish yourself so that the expense of these creams are worth it.

Boring but true.

ShadyPaws · 19/09/2023 22:47

Tretinoin
SPF
Genetics
Oily skin tends to age better

Vitamin c, good diet etc help

Marie2023 · 19/09/2023 22:49

There’s a new ingredient called L22. It is meant to transform the lipid structure of your skin to that of an average 22 year old. It doesn’t turn back the clock, but does leave your skin quite firm and glowing.

TheOGCCL · 19/09/2023 22:52

I think it's 70% genetics. But good skincare definitely makes a difference, for the other 30%.

A thread like this always has people saying they do very little (and their skin looks great). If I did very little I would definitely look worse.

Artinsurance · 19/09/2023 23:07

At 30, I started to cleanse, tone, and moisturise twice a day. I used one with 15 spf to start with but would now recommend a specific and higher spf. I’ve also worn sunglasses virtually every day irrespective of whether it’s sunny. I now have very few wrinkles at 56 and last year I upped my game to add tretinoin and Argireline. My sister, in her late 40’s, and no skincare, has those crisscross wrinkles on her cheeks that you get from sun damage.

Start now, and it doesn’t have to be complex.

Justleaveitblankthen · 19/09/2023 23:51

Why do you have to cleanse, tone and moisturise twice a day?
How clean are your pillows? 🤐
Just kidding.

Honestly I think it's all marketing bollocks.
What even is 'Toning'? If not an invention to sell a product..

Fell for it all in my teens and early twenties.
Now in my 50's I wash my Mascarra off with Dove, rinse with cold water (toning) and wear Aveeno unperfumed cream on my face.
Works a treat.
In the morning, a splash of cold water and mix Aveeno with a smidge of foundation.
That's it.
I do take supplements though 🤓

bryceQ · 20/09/2023 04:43

If i do nothing at all to my face it's fine... I'm lucky not to have problematic skin.

If I use balm Cleanser, vit c, Tret and keep it well hydrated (and Spf) it absolutely glows. It's a quick routine but it makes loads of difference. I'm early 30s.

There is lots of clinical evidence to support anti aging impact of Retinol and sun protection. Anecdotally I find my skin looks most youthful when it's well hydrated.

HappiDaze · 20/09/2023 05:13

We all have different types of skin and therefore require different products at different times of our life or even day to day, season by season

We tend to research as I did and you are OP when our skin starts to turn to shit and then we learn more than planned

Fascinating as your skin care regime is its not entirely relevant for the OP on this thread

OriginalFloorboards · 20/09/2023 05:21

Where do people buy their tret please?

Toner these days tends to refer to acid toners. A salicylic acid for oily skin, a glycolic for mature etc. Active ingredients which, whilst not anti-ageing definitely do more than soap and water for the issues they're used for. The traditional toners don't really do much other than remove the last traces of dirt.

A morning cleanse is just to get the grease and sweat off. I'm always amazed how much muck comes off my face. I admit to not doing it every morning though.
