Dress for my wedding, help!

I'm getting hitched in April and I have no idea where to start looking for a dress to wear. I don't want a traditional wedding dress in terms of a full white affair. Just something that I feel comfortable in, suits me and is appropriate for the occasion.

Some of my info and preferences:

  • I'm currently a large size 18 but working towards being a comfy/small 16 by April.
  • Hourglass shape. Big boobs and bum, tum at the minute. Long legs.
  • I like vintage style, 50s swing dresses suit my shape
  • I look best in dresses with structure that show I have a waist
  • I'd like a quality dress that I can wear again
  • Prefer good second hand or ethical brand new than fast fashion like Shein etc. but open to compromise
  • No colour scheme as yet

Can the wise style sages of mumsnet help?

Budget? Colour preference? Sleeves or not? Length?

Fizzysister · 12/09/2023 22:21

Around £350 for budget but I'd prefer to spend less if possible @thedevilinablackdress

Open minded re. colour, it's April so springtime colours preferable to dark colours. There are some nice greens around and the wedding will have a bit of an ivy theme.

Open minded with sleeves, too, I think it depends on the dress. I don't want loads of flesh out and I'm not hugely fond of my bingo wings but some sleeve styles can make a dress too casual.

I like the idea of a knee length swing dress with a net petticoat underneath, which helps with the structure my shape needs.

They are quite nice @HerMammy and so reasonably priced! I wasn't thinking of going traditional but I might try them on and see what I think.

Great sites @JaceLancs thanks. Bombshell especially! Definitely trying a few of those.

I love the Tilly prom dress at the Pretty Dress Company. All the colours/fabrics are quite wintry though except the Ivory (which is on sale…) guess they may do lighter colours at the end of winter.

Nancy Mac - they have some absolutely beautiful dresses. I seem to love everything I see from them. Its such a shame I don't live a glamorous vintage lifestyle - I can but dream!

Do you look good in green?

I love their jumpsuits! Will look at the dresses, thanks for the reminder.

I'm not sure about colours that suit me tbh as I'm neutral: warm, earthy skin hair and eyes but with pink undertones to my skin. Khaki is an easy yes but I'm not sure about what bright/striking colours would work for me.
