Hair always a greasy mess

I'm at my wits end with my horrible hair. It is always limp and greasy. I dyed it last night and put some effort into styling it with heartless curlers and yet by lunchtime it was a frizzy greasy mess.
I used to have nice hair but I don't know why it's so awful now. I am obese so don't know if it's a hormonal thing but I've tried everything.
I've tried leaving it a few days so I'm not over washing, tried washing it everyday, used a clarifying shampoo, always rinse thoroughly and never put conditioner near my roots.
I've tried high end shampoo and ones specifically for oily hair and nothing works.
It really gets me down.
Does anyone think it may be because of my weight as I really can't see where else I'm going wrong?

I suspect you're over washing your hair with shampoos that are stripping the natural oils out and your scalp is then over-compensating. Try an SLS free shampoo like OGX for a bit. It is a lot gentler on your hair. Will still get it clean, but doesn't foam up in quite the same way.

Try African Black soap on your hair. The brand is Dudu Osun. You can get it from any African / Caribbean hair or grocery shop. It is used as an exfoliating soap, and especially for overactive sweat glands.

Sadly yes, the sebaceous glands on the scalp are influenced by general weight / body fat/ diet. Wishing you all the best DaffodilFlowers

I have PCOS and am “blessed” with oily skin and hair 🙄

I’ve tried every shampoo/conditioner going over the years and currently find that the OGX Argan Oil shampoo/conditioner (the blue bottle with gold lid) works the best. I wash it every day - I have to otherwise I look like I’ve pulled a 12hr shift at the local chippy!

I’ve always found that the shampoos aimed at oily hair are too harsh, those promoting moisture actually work better. Aussie Miracle Moist has also worked for me in the past, but I do find I need to change shampoos every now and then as they seem to stop working as effectively.

Here is a link above to the product OP. If you ask at any of the above mentioned hair and beauty shops, it will be shown to you. All the best

Overwashing is a big thing. Mine was dyed blonde and very oily but would snap and break like anything. At the worst point it would be chip shop oily by 1pm. I stopped dying it, went dark and tried not to wash it every day. It took a while but I can now get away with about 4 days before washing. This is helped by dry shampoo on the roots. (I know...)

Diet is a big one too. I improved my diet to include fewer fried things like crisps and started taking vitamins.

Ditch shampoo entirely. I had a failed attempt at curly girl so was washing with As I Am conditioning wash stuff instead. Definitely didn't end up with curls but I did fix my chronically greasy hair. Hair no longer gets greasy and I can refresh it fine with just a rinse. I usually wash it once a week now just because it feels nice to do but I could probably go a fair bit longer.

Washing less often will not work if the oil issues are hormone related - I’ve got 25-odd years of post-puberty experience to back this up!

Mines the same a combination of fine hair and hormones,
Do you use any styling products at all? I find using mousse or gel helps slow the chip shop look.
Also I use the Inkey List Peptide Volumising Hair Treatment.
Still wash daily though.

Morning,

Before my thyroid levels were balanced by medication, my hair was always oily and flat, I resorted to washing up liquid on a few occasions. I am also overweight, and my hair still falls out a lot, but I put that down to menopause.

I'd recommend trying some dry shampoo but the key to success with it is to use it before your hair gets greasy. Wash and dry your hair as usual, spray a little dry shampoo at the roots and massage in. It'll mop up the grease as it's produced. Talc also works well.
