Ridiculously easy up do's?

I've got an outdoor event on Saturday and I've not left any time to get booked in at a hairdressers to have my hair put up 😩 it's long (just past bra strap length) and gets tangled up at the mere mention of wind, so leaving it down is not really an option. I'd look a total mess before the event even gets started!

I can just about manage a ponytail and messy bun on myself but that's it. What can I do that's stupidly easy but looks really good?

Try tic-Tok for inspiration, lots of how-to videos on there to look at.

Those hairpiece ponytail holders - like a curly hair scrunchie - can look great if you've got wavy or curly hair and you get a good colour match. Makes a meager bun look much fuller. Pull some tendrils down around the face and neck and I thinks it looks great. But the colour needs to match.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 11/09/2023 11:03

I've always liked the look of those but my hair is really difficult to match to, I'm not quite blonde but not quite brown! A weird sort of in between that's not an exact colour of anything Confused

Twist it up and use one of those big hair claw things?
You can get them in loads of colours.
This company does some lovely, but spendy, hair accessories but most usefully if you look at each type of them there are good 'how-to' videos and advice on which size or type will suit different lengths or thickness of hair.

This is a boho wedding hair style video. I’ve done most of them on myself and my 7 year old.

I am useless at hair but my go-to is a Gibson tuck. Takes a little bit of practise- I find it easier to do it without a mirror- but if I can get the hang of it then anyone can. Loads of videos/step by step pics if you Google. I use those hair bands that look like giant hair bobbles, you can get pretty ones like gold plaited or with flowers on if you want a bit of fancy. Saves you trying to match it/blend in with your hair colour too.
If your hair can hold a curl, do it when it's slightly damp. It's nice to take it out towards the end of the night and have lovely loose curls too.

Following OP. I need some ideas too. I like the idea of plaits at the side, swept up with the rest of the hair into a bun or ponytail. Have never managed it successfully though.

You have lovely hair by the way!

DuchessOfSausage · 11/09/2023 14:18

Your hair is lovely and I'd call it ash blond.
You could put it in a french plait or a chignon.
The little helix shaped things are good for holding up a bun.
I would put it in a ponytail and twist the tail around the base then put a grip to hold the end.

Hairclips/barrettes are trendy

I can't do an ordinary plait on myself let alone a French one 🤣 I don't know what a chignon is either 😳

It's a bun at the back of the neck, @AintNobodyHereButUsChickens .
The internet is quite good for finding updos for long hair and Youtube has videos. A french plait is easy once you know how. Done properly your hair won't budge.

A simple low ponytail can look elegant.

redastherose · 11/09/2023 21:42

A French Pleat is quite easy. Comb your hair back smoothly to the nap of your neck then twist it round an end round then turn up t he twisted ponytail and hold it against your head while still twisting it will sort of coil around itself and then you can pop any length left under the twisted bit and pin in place. Tease up the top a bit and pull a couple of strands either side in front of your ears and curl with a wand. Looks really classy.

JoyceBarry · 11/09/2023 21:47

A sock bun is probably the easiest but keep it low.

Seconded. It's by far the easiest and the one which is most likely to be right first time.

Whataretheodds · 11/09/2023 22:34

Do you know how to backcomb? I'd backcomb for a 1960s style crown and twist the rest into a chignon. It's very easy but leave some time to do it.

BarnacleBeasley · 18/02/2025 14:58

If you google 'how to put hair up with a pencil' there are loads of styles you can do - my top tip is to use a second pencil (a nice set of chopsticks probably looks more formal!) to secure it in place.
