Facial hair

Looking for the best way to remove facial hair for slower growth, I'm a woman of a certain age and seem to have grown a very fine beard with a few stubbly whiskers. Can't really afford an IPL machine or salon treatments so wanting recommendations of best things to use at home, I have shaved in the past but it grows back so much quicker

Hi @Humidititties
If you can, try Jolen facial hair lightner. Overtime it will look better and easier to manage xx

Just use a razor. Two seconds in the shower and never gets long enough to be noticeable.

Yeah I'd rather not shave, I don't want to have to do it everyday and it leaves me with dry spotty skin.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'd rather remove it than lighten it. It's already a very light colour and is downy and soft but very noticeable, and then the odd dark thicker hair in between.

Would waxing make the regrowth slower or a hair removal cream?

Electrolysis is the best permanent solution. I had it done for my own facial hair which wasn't receptive to laser. It was far more effective than laser on the face. My mother who sprouted hairs on her chin after going through the menopause also had it done. She has been hair free for a few years now.

Timeforabiscuit · 07/09/2023 16:37

I've tried all methods before finding a solution that worked.

Jolenne or lightening, my hair is too coarse to get away with

chemical hair removal like nair- my skin reacts badly

Threading - I got along fine with, but I still got occasional deep spots on my chin and neck area.

IPL worked amazingly on the fine top lip hair (this has gone entirely now) and has reduced the coarser neck hair, but it's a pain sticking to a consistent schedule on.

Razor has worked the best, I use a mens razor subscription like Harry's (whatever is on offer) dh usually gets one for me as he gets offers through.i found using an expensive moisturising shave cream or gel is important for my skin so it doesn't dry out, mens ones are better quality but do smell a bit boy!

I find waxing the best, tried electrolysis and hairs grew back. Laser (at a beauty salon) worked for about 5 years.

Yup, a certain age and PSOS sufferer here.

I bought an epilator and use it once or twice a week also always have a pair of tweezers to hand and pull the little buggers when I feel one bristling.

I have pale skin and pale hairs so laser treatment isn't going to be very effective and I could never afford it anyway. I decided that I needed a simpler method that I could use at home (also can't afford a weekly wax at a salon).

Anecdotally, laser treatment also seems ineffective for the long term anyway with PCOS I have probably read every chin hair thread on MN for the last 20 years!

Anyway, the epilator is very painful to use initially but it genuinely hurts less the more you use it.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, think I'll try waxing first

I know you said you would prefer to avoid salon treatments, but, honestly, electrolysis is the way to go. It works on all types of hair (for example, on hair that is too light or too near to your skin-tone for laser) and it is the only thing that is permanent.

My chin was perpetually breaking out with these wiry little hairs pushing through, some black but some white. If I shaved them, the ends poked through in no time at all. Waxing and threading led to ingrown bumps. Electrolysis took a few sessions but now they are GONE.

I get you but I don't have the money for salon treatments, I was looking for at home solutions

What about the sides

Mine is fair but it is awful

I tried using sugaring.

It also gets hard to distinguish where my head hair ends itms
